View Full Version : Can overclocking negatively affect internet speed?

Hi,
I'm currently running a Celeron 466 in a BX board, Win98SE, IE 5.5, cable modem with a Linksys LNE100TX (version 2-about a year old) with the latest available drivers.
First of all, loading these drivers really slows down booting--is this common?
Then I notice that when I run at 466, web pages and pictures load faster than running at 566. Is the ethernet card sensitive to changes in the PCI bus? On the box it claims to operate independently of your PC's processor for super fast bus speeds. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks very much.
Disabling DHCP may help if you know what your ISP settings are for internet access to get a faster boot.
As far as overclocking affecting internet speeds...definately can. If your NIC is at a PCI bus it cannot quite run at it can do some funky stuff. Can drop its connection, lose packets, etc.

I'd like to know how they define "independently" -- if your bus speed is raised so is the speed of your PCI bus and your NIC WOULD be affected (as Jon said). So how could a card operate independently? (The only thing I can think of is an internal PCI divider but how could a PCI divider be implemented inside a card??? I've pondered this and I just don't think it's possible.)

That probably just means that it does all of it's processing on card as opposed to sluffing it off to the CPU.

but they advertise super fast bus speeds??
makes no sense to me...

If the FSB is too high and the network card/ modem is out of spec your will get slow or no internet - at least i did at 169 FSB.
Jason is right.. with the higher FSB your NIC will go blank and will not function right getting poor connections ie: packet loss or connection problems..

Thank you everyone for your help. I picked up a D-Link DFE-530TX+ and my Celeron is happily back sizzling at 581 :)
