View Full Version : Broken Off capacitor on x800

In my endless stupidity, I shipped my PowerColor X800 pro VIVO (modded to XT, also with water cooling) in its case on an air plane, my CPU water block fell on it, while in transit and it smashed capacitor C24 off. Also, my motherboard's second IDE cable slot got smashed to smithereens. :bang head. I set up my stuff and everything sort of works. it POSTS with graphical glitching (sort of vertical white dotted lines) and windows loads and looks fine, but it crashes after a few minutes of doing stuff. ATI tool, when scanning for artifacts, shows 80 bajillion artifacts on the speeds I had found most stable before C24 broke off. I can lower my memory speed to a pitiful 240 MHZ and it was stable (no artifacts) and I can use windows without crashing but, I go back and check it right now, and it shows artifacts. That leads me to think that my card is deteriorating quickly. The CPU core speed is unaffected by this.

I have a soldering kit, but I don't really know how to use it. Maybe I could buy a similar capacitor and solder it back on?

Do any places offer a repair service for this kind of stuff? I can't send it back to ATI, because of the modding and the water block.

or am I better off buying a new card? The card was $460 when I bought it.

I am really at a loss for what to do.
