It should not overheat, as long as you dont overclock it [if you even could] if you dont raise CV [core voltage] then heat should not be a problem if it does get hot i would take it back. One note the programs your talking about will probably get the CPU as hot as it will get hopefully if your ambient temps are low enough you will never have a problem.

That and dont set it on a soft surface like a towel or a pillow. That will usually block the fans.

do laptops have fans?? I have never heard a laptop with a fans.
I thought the CPU had a speed technology that meant that when it got too hot it slowed itself down.. Is this right???

No...not really. My roommate has a 1Ghz laptop and it heats up quite a bit. The speed step technology only declocks the processor when he is running off battery to last longer. I am not sure you might be able to go to bios and throttle the CPU if it over heats. I would check this out seeing how some laptops do have poor cooling.

so if i wanted to fold on the laptop is it ok or not???

It should be ok to fold on it.
And yes laptops have fans. At least the major majority of them do.

Kingslayer's rite they do have fans, and you should not have a heat problem unless your ambient temps are high. As far as speed step tech I think that has mostly to do with p4's but if i'm mistaken someone please let me know.

p3 doesn't have speed step and I only thought the Athlon 4 had that in it as well as the Tualatin?

Well, the Mobile P/// does, in fact, have Speedstep for reducing power consumption while in battery mode.
The mobile palomino is supposed to have that, though I haven't really heard much about it. Haven't looked into it, though. Definately heard that the PIV has it, and I haven't really heard anything about the Tualatins having it. Doesn't mean they don't, though.

Speed Step was introduced to the Pentium 3 850MHz and up and is only available on the specific models of chip, this only helps stop power consumption.
It is also available on the P4s and I beleive the Tualatins most certainly will have or an advanced version of it...
I think I will fold on it and see if it gets hot at the base etc etc....
Well If you'll excuse I must go a nd pick my new laptop up from the shop!!
