I'm trying to set up a local network between 3 (soon to be 4) computers that I have. I've come into a Linksys BEFSX41 router and have been trying to use it to network my computers together.

The primary purpose is to share a dial-up (yea, I know...) internet connection from one computer to all the others. I have the other 3 running folding programs.

Can I use this router to accomplish this purpose? Do I need a switch or a hub instead? I don't have DSL/cable internet, nor am I going to purchase that service in the near future.

I'm running MS XP on all computers.

Thanks!!

You are going to want to use the internet connection sharing wizard to acomplish this. Here is a guide on how to do that.

Check this section about internet connection sharing through a proxy and then the next post and check the section about internet connection sharing.

I used ICS to share dial-up using a router a few years ago. Something to keep in mind, when you plug your computers into the router, they will probably get the IP of the router as the default gateway. You need to set the default gateway to the IP of the computer with the dial-up internet connection. It's been a while, so I am a little foggy as to how I had everything set up, but it is possible. Good Luck.
