View Full Version : Blue led trick!

Hey im not sure if anyone knew this, but I figured out a fairly easy way to wire an ultra-bright blue led.

I bought a 5mm blue led (2600mcd, 3.7volt, 20mA) and I tried to simply replace the green one with the blue one. It worked, but it was so faint that it could barely be seen. Then I realized that the blue led needed more power than the mobo power led pins could offer.

So this is what I did:

unplugged a 3-pin fan connector, cut the blue and red wires (pos and neg) and stripped them a bit at the top

cut the old power led connector wires and stripped them a bit at the top (mine were green and white)

twisted the positive wires (stripped part) together (red and green in this case)

twisted the negative wires (stripped part) together (blue and white in this case)

wrap connections in electrical tape

plug the fan connector back into the mobo, replace that crappy green led with your sweet brite blue led. Now it should go on when you turn on your computer!

Hope this helps, I'm kinda a newbie and I couldn't find anything on making the led brighter so hopefully someone can learn from my adventures in mod-land!

Be sure to put a resistor inline with the power lead or you'll fry your LED. It's designed for 3.7V and you're feeding it 12V.

you can also give it 5v using the red, and a gnd using the black.

yeah you should do it the correct way a 5volt led with 5volt from ps! I actually use super brights at @2.0 from mobo and they are still super bright!

quick revision, I had it connected to the 5v with a ground, i dont know why I said pos+neg. :D

Thats the way im running my power led. It didnt work off my new mobo, maybe a voltage problem, maybe a mobo problem, but anyway, i just wired it into my 5v line (its a 5v LED). Works great.
