I was doing a SFC /SCANNOW test and I had my XP CD-ROM in my DVD-RW drive. Anyways it kept coming every now & then saying that the DLL file that's need to be copied. I then moved the Set-up disc to the DVD-RW drive & I clicked on retry it then moved on. And never came up as much as it did in the DVD-ROM could it be a cable problem cause my DVD-RW is on a brand new round IDE while my DVD-ROM is on a cable that came with my motherboard.
My XP is running fine but I read in the Offical XP mag that when doing a scan disc test and basically cleaning out your system. You should do a SFC /SCANOW test too why does it kepp doing the above if it's supposed to have copied them across already.
PS: Also can you use the XP pro set-up disc for Windows File Protection on a Home Edition machine thats a pre-installed version.

usually it defaults looking for the CD (or path) that is set in the registry as "install path" so It was looking in the drive you installed windows from and the CD wasnt there.
or maybe I'm not following you. However if it tells you it needs to replace files then thats what its doing :) its putting system files back to thier proper states using the windows CD as a source. I honestly dont see a need to do this routinely, merely as a step to fx a problem, but to each his own.

I installed XP off my DVD-ROM drive but it kept coming up with that question all the time. So I put it in my DVD-RW drive and it hardly did it about 3 times in total I just did it for the 1st time since February just too make sure it was ok and they where intact.
Can anyone answer my small question too since my work's PC came with XP Home installed on it. Can I use my XP Pro disc when I do a SFC /SCANNOW action cause believe me there PC is totaly slow and I reckon since they don't know much about security. It's infested with spy & adware not mention maybe a virus plus they've they installed junk they don't really need.

I've never tried it, but I doubt it will work. XP home and pro have several components that are different (ie the networking and authentication). If it did try replacing files, it may use an incompatible file for the OS. The other big thing that makes me doubt it would work is that its M$ software. You're supposed to have a legit disk for the OS installed

Your right my brother has an Emachines PC his XP Home was installed onto it OEM I believe there called. Anyways if I try to do a SFC /SCANNOW action it says please insert CD-ROM I can't remember if it says insert SP2's CD-ROM I'll re-check later during week. Anyways it's tomorrow when I do my work's PC I'll just clean it of any spy-ware & ad-aware plus update there virus scan & firewall.
I also think there's a few files they don't need on it too I've recently found out they have only 256mb RAM. I told them that I can get a GEIL 512mb KIT (256mb x2) for £35 that should boost the system once I've freed up some memory before hand.
