ok yesterday i brought an 80Sata drive as i need a new drive and what not now i canna get it to work so i need you help! :D
this is the drive i brought: -
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB 800JD SATA 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-023-WD)
WD Caviar® SE Serial ATA hard drives have the features and capacities that are ideal for next-generation computers and low-end enterprise storage. Users benefit from a data transfer rate of 150 MB/s and an improved cabling that enables greater system design flexibility. Designers of enterprise storage systems and servers are increasingly using desktop-class, large-capacity SATA hard drives because of the advantages that the SATA interface provides.
- Rotational Speed: 7,200 RPM
- Capacity: 80GB
- Average Read Seek Time: 8.9 ms
- Buffer: 8MB
- Interface: Serial ATA
- 3 year manufacturer's warranty
Recommended: Western Digital's Serial ATA cable with SecureConnect™. provides a 500 percent stronger cable-to-drive connection than first-generation SATA hard drives and cables; for use with Western Digital SATA drives only.
and here is the link to the cable i brought for it: -http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/sata_cables.html#acb_2d000_2dwd
but when i connect it to the board it dont even spin up or say hello lol anyone know why?
oh im using a gigabyte k7 triton board
Do you have the proper power connectors? Most S-ata drives will require S-ata power connectors, some may use regular old 4-pin molex ones but they are scarce.
i was told i only needed the above cable here is the info: -
Western Digital Secure Connect Serial ATA Cable (CB-000-WD)
Western Digital Serial ATA cables with SecureConnect™ provide a stable, secure attachment between the hard drive and cable. With SecureConnect, the drive to cable connection is strengthened by more than 500% compared to standard SATA cables which helps overcome connector breakage problems common to SATA cables. These cables are compatible with conventional system-side SATA connectors and backplanes.
This cable is for use only with Western Digital Serial ATA hard drives or other drives with the SecureConnect feature.
i canna post an image restrictions on the computer im on :(
You will need to attach two cables to the drive. One for Data, one for power. It sounds weird tho, a pic might help.
im at the libery lol if you lick the link in my 1st post youll see the cable that i brought if that helps :/
That looks like a cable where the power and data ones are integrated. make sure you connect them both to the 'module'. You will need a cable leading to your PSU.
ok now im lost!
i have that cable and i connect that to the board right?
then i need a seperate cable that leeds to the power like my other hard drive which is IDE? is that right? sorry for sounding stupid im havin a bad hair and mind day!

The only thing that extra module is for, is to have the power and data come together at the harddrive to make for a more solid connection. From that module, one cable will go to the mobo and one to the PSU.
damn! im going to have ago at overclockers.co.uk for not giving me all the correct gear! they said thats all i needed mind u the guy didnt know either :( thanks for the help mate :)
just have o hope my IDE drive dont die yet it's on it's way tho i think!

i'd get another mobo with SATA if you can
ditto my board supports SATA and i have it working now :D
im using the old type power from the psu to power it (legacy is it?) ;) and i have one of these that came with the motherboard transffering the data: -

oh one more question!

if so how do i go on doing it? just like a normal setup?
then i can use the old drive thats dieing (well making wierd noises) for music (HDD anylysers say its fine but i dont trust them!)

Use the silver cable and legacy power. The secureConnect is a nice feture, but unecessary IMO.

Windows will not run any faster on SATA drive, except if you're using a Western Digital Raptor, but that is due to the fact that the Raptor is a 10,000 RPM drive (most drives are only 7200 RPM). Stick with what you have now.
If you do want to install windows on your SATA drive, then you must provide some additional drivers at the start of Windows Setup. If you want more info on that, take a look at the SATA 101 link in my signature.
Hope that helps! :)
ok thanks for that dark i'll save and buy a raptor then as photoshop is taking too long to load lol (i have 300fonts and over 200meg of brushes for it!)
