I am considering making a passive setup, meaning entierly. But to cool the coolant without fans on the radiator would require one of larger size obviously. So my question is does anyone know where one could get something like that. It doesnt seem like our run of the mill pc watercooling places have anything in that area.

thanks :)

Have you checked out this article @ SilentPCReview?

The rig in the article uses a quiet pump in conjunction with a massive radiator.

An alternative to using a massive radiator is to build a silent "bong"; an open evaporative watercooling setup. Search for "Volenti" and you should find some pictures to look at. I have a setup like this one, but it is a pain to maintain. I find myself saying the following, "I have to water my computer."

I am about to do the same thing. I got two new copper core rads from smallcarspecialist on ebay for about $35 shipped ea (one for me and one for a friend). They are about 24" wide by 12" high. They are for some British compact car called the MG Metro.

I really like the size as they are a lot larger than PC watercooling rads, but nowhere near as large as most car rads. The only thing I have to do is block up a 7/8" hole that is in the end tank for a coolant sensor, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem (Ace is the place!). 1 1/4" hose (Lowe's) fits over the rad hose ends, so I just have to get some plumbing pieces to reduce it down to 1/2" ID.

I don't see any more of these listed on ebay, but if you want to, you can PM me and I will give you their email address and you can see if they have any more.

If I hadn't of found these i was going to go with a copper core 1990 Geo Metro rad as it is about 13" x 14". I found one online somewhere for about $100 (ebay motors I think).

Well theres the reserator and all its clones.

A car radiator will work but its density isnt really ideal.

This core of this rad is only about 5/8" thick. Not to mention it sure going to be hard to beat $35.

thanks guys.

I though about bong's but i really dont want to turn my room in to a sauna lol. I dont want to go though the trouble of getting a dehumidifier, its humid enough here as it is :)

You know a car radiator was my first idea but what realled stopped me from jumping on that band wagon is the amount of water. Help me out here guys but wouldnt that be to much water for a relativly small pumps we use to push around?

jamesavery22, what do you mean? do you have any better solutions?

and PS, voigts, why did you choose the MG Metro radiator over the 1990 Geo Metro?

yeah and the reserator and the likes cant really handle much heat. A 3.6ish ghz P4 and a 9800 and you max it out.

With a car rad you could have some very very quiet fan like a 12" normal house fan blow on it and it will cool like 5 computers =)

using a bong isnt going to dump any more heat in your room than a car radiator. well it might if you get lucky and can get sub-ambient temps. But a bong in general is just a whole mess if you ask me. Its fun if you have the space and dont mind dealing with all the quirts, just not for me.

what did I mean about the density? any radiator, hc, one made for a computer, car radiator, all have very dense fins, requiring a certain amount of pressure to move air though them. While surface area is still king, in a passive setup density becomes a bigger player. As in that convenction radiator that Polonator linked would get better performance than a 120.2 or maybe even a 120.3 even though it has a lot less surface area.
In "passive" setups there is still air flow. Just very little. Hot air rises etc. For a heatercore or car rad or the link to get good performance with no fans at all a chimney type setup is ideal. Cathar did some tests with it. The chimnys were kind of big though.

I dont really have any better suggestions. Ive been trying to build a passive setup around a 5' baseboard heater for months now but never finished it. Don't expect great results.

If you have some small 3ghz setup and you arent overclocking the reserator would be at the top of my list.
If you have some huge 4ghz+ and SLI setup a car rad hanging out a window on a cold day would be best.

Guess it boils down to what you want to cool.

And in general I find most people who want passive setups are more than happy with the right rad and fan setup. Like a pa160 and a nexus 120.

I never said heat, saunas are very humid, and the bong will make a tropical rain forest out of my already hot room lol.

As far as my set up goes its a hard deal. I need to make it dead silent and I am running a powerful setup. Its not a matter of my happiness but someone elses as far as the noise goes, I dont care but someone else does lol, so it neads to be as quite as it can get (<--- is investing in some sound dampning material lol) but yeah its a mean duce I am in.

Any idea where I can buy a radiator like the one in the set up linked by Polonator? or something remoatly similar anyway.

this project is more out of necesity then need so I am going to great lengths to get everything nice *sigh

I chose the MG Metro radiator over the 1990 Geo Metro mainly because of the $70 price difference. Either of them should work fine.
