the last four games i've bought installed fine, but when i try to play them afterwards, Win98 acts as if it is a copied disc!!

when i click on the game's icon, i get an hour-glass for a few seconds, then it's gone. the CTRL+ALT+DEL menu displays that the game is running, but it thinks it's a copied disc and doesn't run! Then i go download the crack for the game and everything is fine!

i was wondering if maybe somebody knows of a program that has the ablility to cause this or maybe knows how to cure it... i really dont want to reformat

thanks

If it is indeed a "Retail CD" then you should have no problems trying the tech support lines for the games in question. They will I am sure be more than happy to assist you. If it is not a retail cd then I would ask that you please remove your post we do not allow Warez, Cracks or anything of that Nature to be discussed.

I would try it on a friends machine with a similar make up if you can. Try to see if in Win98 is messed up. I have had to reformat/reinstall Win98 in the past to clean up "left over" crap from other apps or things I have done.

But since it was the last 4 games you bought, I would take the time to backup what you need and do a clean install. It will be a pain in the butt while you do it and reconfigure... but it could be well worth it down the road.

Good Luck!

Check the game mfg's site for a patch.......this is often the problem.

DON'T ask for any cracks tho.......(not saying you have)

these are retail cds, not copied!! :)

thank you for the replies!
i was originally going to call the mfg but then when it started happening to EVERY game I installed, I figured it was my problem.

yes, i have tried a virtual cdrom and in fact i'm blaming the problem on it!! this problem sprung up around the time i installed the virtual cdrom, and i've seen warnings on a few pages dealing with these programs about peoples original copies needing cracked. i uninstalled the vcdrom obviously, but the problem is still here... no big deal though i guess... the games work perfect with a crack!

thanks again!

EEK!!

now my other system is having the same problem!!! i just bought diablo II, and since i have to crack it just to get it to work, i can't play online!!!

woohoo... now i have to reformat TWO systems! Great!

i was going to recommend NOT using the vcdrom "Daemon Tools", but i seem to be the only one who's had this problem, so... nevermind!

I never really had a problem with Norton Virtual Drive maybe you should check that one out ? Perhaps that will help better for you. Hope that helps

I recently had the same problem with Deus Ex. It wouldn't start at all, it kept looking for the CD and could never find it- even though it was right there in the drive the whole time. This was after the patch, too. Still happened after uninstalling Virtual Drive and reinstalling the game, so I finally gave up and whipped out the hex editor and cracked that bad boy. It only cost me $10 from the bargain bin, I'm not about to sit on hold for an hour to hear IonStorm tell me to reinstall the game.

Sometimes the No-CD crack is the only option you have. If you paid for the game, there's nothing too wrong with it-
I'm not about to tell you how to crack it your self so don't ask.:) A weekend playing with hex editors is all the learning you need to do it yourself.

Try copying the game CD to your hard drive, and install it from there. Sometimes that works also. Good luck!

do you have more than one ROM drive? (DVD, CD, Burner)
have you tried the disk in the other drive?

You probably don't need to reformat...just try a hard install of windows (delete win.com from the root directory [might be the Windows directory] and then install it)...that should get rid of most of the registry fubar-ness without deleting all of your stuff. :)
