View Full Version : Why no Internet Connection?

I just bought a new network cable because one of the wires in my old one near the connector broke and killed the connection. Everything was working fine before the cord broke. Now I've got the new one home, and when I plug it in I can't connect to the Internet. It recognizes a LAN as being connected in the system tray, but when I open IE it won't load any pages. I have it set to auto-detect settings. I also logged into my router from another computer, and it recognizes that my computer is connected to the router. The second computer is obviously working fine, otherwise I wouldn't be able to write this. Any idea what's going on? The cord is the exact same type as the old one I was using (category 5).
P.S. I've also tried using the repair connection function but it does nothing of any help.

sounds like you arent getting an IP or a DNS.
i know that 4.2.2.2 is a reliable DNS server

Where would I need to put the DNS server info (I mean how do I get to that option?) Also, I notice that the IP listed by by LAN is not the IP address listed in my router settings. Could this be the problem, and if so do you know how I can set it manually?
Edit: I figured out how to enter this info. I put in the correct IP address, it automatically set the subnet gateway, and I put in the suggested DNS address. I still have no connection. I did set it to manual settings rather than leaving it to automatically configure my connection, so that wasn't the problem. Any other ideas?

have you tried unplugging the router and resetting it to factory defaults?

allso, leave the IP thing at autodetect. the dns trick is a stand-alone thing if your ISP's DNS srevers are unreliable

it might be a bad cable. try swapping it with the one going to the other comp maybe? network cables can be a pain in the bum, if one of the data wires isnt making a good connection. it can show up that its connected and everything, but will only get data one way. so then it wont get an ip or anything else from the router side.
try another cable, my suggestion. be a nice investment to buy a pair of crimpers and some ends so you cn always replace ends if a wire breaks or the like.
