I've just starting to try my hand at O/Cing and need some help. I need to know if all the info I have is CORRECT or if I might be doing something VERY wrong.

My mobo has the Intel 440BX chipset: default 100mhz FSB, using PC100 Sdram; the processor is PIII 800Mhz 100Mhz FSB Slot 1. My vid card is GeForce 2 MX 400. The mobo uses "goldfingers" (is that the right term?)

I've looked all over the internet and it seems many have O/C PIIIs succefully on this mobo, but I'm a little hesitant :o (maybe 'cause I'm a newbie :( )

SiSoft Sandra reports "Rated speed/ FSB" is 1066/133. So this is my goal: to overclock to 1066Mhz and 133Mhz FSB.

I bought a Vantec P3-5030 hsf; should be getting it tomorrow or Tues. I also have two 80mm case fans (one intake, one output), the vid card came with a hsf, and the chipset has the standard green heatsink. Right now the mobo temps are about 28C/82.4F. I don't know the CPU temps 'cause I don't have the probe or any guages. Hopefully I should be safe with the Vantec HSF, right?

*What I'm really worried about is the PCI buses and the CPU. I SHOULD be ok with the memory 'cause I have a stick of Crucial PC133 ECC sdram (CL=3) (please let me know if I'm wrong on this). But I don't want to fry anything else.

*If you look at THIS (http://www.et.byu.edu/~azonic/jumpers.jpg) pic you'll see the FSB jumper settings and their corresponding PCI bus frequencies. Everywhere they say you should bump up the FSB in small increments but NOTICE the PCI bus freq. get up to 40MHz. HOWEVER, at 133Mhz FSB the PCI freq. is 33.3Mhz

SO, would I be safer just trying 133FSB from the get-go and hope the processor/vid card/memory can handle it?

Btw, the AGP jumper will be set at 2/3 of the FSB, so it would be running at 88.6 Mhz. Do you think my Vid card will handle it?

I know this is alot of info, but ANY tips, advice, warnings, suggestions would be VERY appreciated

Wecome to the boards Azonicbruce! The hardware you have and are getting looks fine to me! Take it easy and first try 112FSB and if succesfull 124FSB, your GeforceMX will handle the out-of-spec AGP. (my TNT2 is running 89Mhz right now :) Make sure your RAM is set to 3-3-3, you can try lower if all seems stable. Also try to set AGP 1x instead of 2x to gain stability above 112FSB. 133FSB seems to be a long shot with a slot1 800E but who knows maybe you'll get lucky. Just don't take the Vcore above 1.9V and the Input-Output Voltage above 3.6V (your Asus board defaults to 3.45 to cope with some GeForce256 cards) and you should be safe. Good luck and let us know what happened, ok?!

Thanks for a quick reply:)

Questions: I was told I couldn't change the core voltage for my CPU; ALSO, my mobo manual states "Voltage Regulator Output Selection (VID) is not needed for the Pentium II/III/Celeron processor because it sends a VID signal directly to the onboard power controller"

SO what does this all MEAN?

Also, HOW do I change the AGP to 1x? Don't see anything in Bios for that.

I really want to try and O/C NOW but I think I should wait for the new HSF to arrive, ya think? Kinda scared about doing that too (removing old HSF) but hopfully I'll be careful.

i would try the 124/31 setting first. you'll probably need better ram if you want the 133/33 setting.

Better RAM? What exactly do you mean? Better brand or better type? Thanks in advance

Again, I have one module in right now: 256 MB Crucial (Micron) PC133 ECC CL3

I think your ram will be fine. I would be more concerned about the heat sink you ordered. I have two slot 1 P3's a 600@840 and a 750@1000. I have used about ever HSF on the market including the Vantec you ordered. While it is better than stock it is a far cry from the best. I recomend either an Alpha P-3125 or for a cheaper second choice try a Global Win VOS-32. Good Luck
