View Full Version : 9500@128 or 9600@256?

Hey All,

I ordered a Sapphire Radeon 9600 (256mb) for my girlfriends computer, and I have a Radeon 9500 (128mb) in my rig. Now, she doesn't game, or care. So..... I was thinking of giving her my card and keeping the 9600.... Is this a good idea? Normally I wouldn't hesitate but I saw some discouraging reviews about the Sapph. 9600, so i was just wondering if you guys could drop some insight on me.

depends what the memory is. is it 128bit or 64bit

The memory on which one?

The 9600 is : 128 & Running @ 325mhz
and 9500 is: 128 & Running @ 275mhz

no not the memory size the memory type its either 128bit 64 bit or 256bit

Thats what I meant they are both the same 128bit memory.

yeah, both are 128mb, the 9600 has 256mb, and the 9500 has 128mb...

hmm, any1 have any head-to-head comparisons on the 9500 against the 9600s?? i'm gussin the 9600 should win, but i don't know ATi cards

The 9500 ROCKS the 9600 hands down.

Check this review at THG (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-04.html), It shows the 9500 beating the 9600, mainly because of it's slower mem clock speed.

I agree, keep the 9500. The 256MB versions of the 9600 almost always have slower ram on them. I see you stated that it has 325Mhz ram, do you have a link to the exact card you are buying? Usually the 256MB versions only have 200mhz ram.

That is 325 core clock, it probably has 2x200mhz mem clock as mentioned above.

but... when u overclock doesnt the 9600 beat 9500?.....i dunt remember exact link but i remember reading a benchmark between both before when oc'ed

How far a card will oc isn't guaranteed, and since the 9600 has 256mb of mem it will be harder to oc the mem which is what is making the 9600 slower.

oh then i guess the 9600 pro that i read was a 128mb....... my friend bought one at the computer show today (marketpro) and he bought the 9600pro which was 256 meg and quite overclocked pretty well......he got i think 50-60mhz somehow on both his core and memory and it doesnt even have a fan on the heatsink :rolleyes: atitool also showed no artifacts.......EVEN his case temperate is about 40-50c with very little ventilation and still ocied pretty well :santa:

As far as I know, 9600XTs are the only 9600s that have 256mb

The 9500 non pro is generally neck and neck to just a tad faster than the 9600 non pro. The 9600 Pro and the 9500 Pro are generally neck and neck, with the 9500 Pro winning a bit more.

The 9600 XT is generally much closer to the 9500 pro, but still neck and neck.

However, most 9600 based cards overclock extremely well. The average 9600 can overclock to the point where it is faster in all scenarios than the average oc of a 9500.

Wait... Are we talking a 9500np or a 9500Pro; and are we talking a 9600np, 9600Pro, or 9600XT?

The main difference between the three cards is the number of pipelines, and the core clock speed. If you have a 9500np, any kind of 9600 should beat it (though a 9600np would probably be too close to tell). If you have a 9500Pro, only the 9600XT will be fast enough to be a contender (and I'm unsure which would win).


EDIT: Looks like dguy6789 beat me to the post :D
EDIT 2: Just saw the link and see that it's a 9600np, which means any 9500 should beat it (though if you have a 9500np, it'd be neck and neck as dguy6789 said).

That reminds me of the GeForce 4 Tis, the 64 MB version having faster RAM than the 128 MB version!

Also, if it's a SE, it will have slower RAM!!!

How much are the 9500pro and nonpros going for?

Seems like a good card. I flightsim, and anyone that flightsims (Microsoft flight Simulator) knows that this simulator is heavy on one's system. There are a lot of addons that can be added to this Microsoft Flight Simulator, and this could take a toll on the computer.

As for me I love to have realism, and having addons for the MFS is a must for me. Do you guys think this card should suffice?

I'm looking for crisp gaming, no lagging. Thanks.
