Zone alarm is not annoying.
Turn off the pop-up alert windows, and it runs away in the system tray quite quietly. The only time it will bother you is when a new application wants to access the internet. Give it permission(or deny it), make sure you tick the "remember this....." box, and that's it. Far less annoying, and more effective than Norton, McAffee or BlackIce will ever be. It is the preferred choice of many people here......

for software, zonealarm is the way to go....
if you don't like it, try a hardware solution (but those cost $$$)

I agree with reddeathdrinker **EDIT**and Amedeo602, but there are a few other options:
1 if you have an old PC (486/PI 100Mhz or higher, its been done with a PI 90Mhz and a ~600Mb HD) you could use that as a firewall (you need to install Linux SuSe....WIN is possible but it would be easier to Install ICS on your Main box). I can give you more info if you're gonna try that (not all the info maybe cuz I'm new to Linux, but I'm sure other ppl can). The positive thing is that you get to know other OS's.
2 Or you could Install ICS (I'm using that and it works fine for me, one minor problem tho if you want to host games you need to switch it off.........haven't found a solution for that yet).

ZoneAlarm gets my vote :D
Zone Alarm is annoying at first, but just click the "remember" thingy box (as I like to call it) and after a week it'll stop bothering you.

my vote goes to Black Ice, and norton internet security. With both on paranoid settings, any probe on my box comes up as a black hole.

i use two firewalls
zonealarm is unbeatable for watching what goes in and out of your connection
i use blackice defender pro as my other firewall,as it gives good info on port scanners and the like
i set and forget both of them in the tray and no problems

I use both a hardware and software solution.
Hardware: Linksys 8-port xDSL router.
Software: ZoneAlarm
Yeah, so im a little paranoid. ZA is a great piece of software, only time that it gets annoying is when playing certain online games where the file updates often and i have to keep clicking "Remember..." but thats a small price to pay for the security of it. You can check out grc.com (http://www.grc.com) as well, Gibson is an excellent source for security issues.
Conclusion: Go with ZA.

I must also say ZoneAlarm - just disable the popup screen by telling it to remember the answer next time it occurs and after bout 10 minutes online you wont have to set anything else, and it does a good job, or go to XP and use the Built in firewall which is better than ZoneAlarm
nice avatar ocjason
:D
use zonealarm. black ice doesnt really work.

BEST AVATAR... Where did u get that?
all firewalls are annoying to me.
but with the software ones at least it only takes a day or 2 before you got it custamized to the point of it not being so annoying.

I use three. Zonealarm, Tinypersonal firewall, and blackice. Zonealarm catches 85% of stuff, BlackIce the rest, and Tiny for protection. Steve Gibson of GRC.com a Internet Security Guru rated ZoneAlarm and Tiny Personal Firewall the best because they keep stuff out and stuff in. A trojan can't name itself iexplore.exe and get through since they use digital signitures on the .exe's that you approve. It may be annoying, but it will keep hackers out.

I vote zonealarm for software, and sonicwall for hardware........
however I set up a linksys router a week ago , and I have not recieved any hack attempts to my machine since. I guess the hackers get to the router and don't see what they are looking for. I used to get 20-30 hits a day, now nothing.
