Simple question, Is there any real difference between the ATI Radeon x850 XTPE, and the ATI Radeon x80 XT? I know the clock speeds are a little higher on the Platinum Edition, but do you think the slight speed bump justifies another $75.00?
In my opinion no it doesn't, How much are you paying for it?

only differences are higher clock speeds and VIVO, though im sure you can find a XT with VIVO, its definitly not worth the 75$ if you don't need the VIVO

Two local retailers are selling the 850XT for $399 after rebates. One of them lists the description as the Platinum Edition, but the part number is for the XT non platinum. I have a few of my computer components that a buddy wants to buy, so it would only cost me about $250 out of pocket.
I was asking because depending on how much you where going to pay for it I would suggest the 7800gtx instead.

the only real reason to get a pe is if your really trying to get a maximum overclock with it. of course when you shell out the extra $ for the pe and then it doesnt overclock any higher than what the plain xt' are doing you start wonder where the diffrence in price went.
if i had to guess id say 90% + of the x850xt can do the pe speeds without any trouble though. so if your only looking to get to the pe speeds id highly recommend the stock x850xt over the pe
you mean the 7800Gtx Avg?
lol yeah.

OK, thanks, I'll be getting the 850XT, the price is much better, especially considering the $50 rebate.

Good choice, no need to pay a buttload more for a few more MHz. :)

Only difference is speedbinning ( PE often do oc a tad bit better) and the bios that raises the default clocks - no other differences. PE can alos come in non- Vivo versions

May I ask what the actual clock speeds are? Seems to be different for the PCI-E version. I just bought an X850XT and want to know how far I have to go to hit the PE speeds! :)

You are much better off with the XT, mine is the vivo version even though it did not state that on the box and my out of the box OC was 594/621 with stock cooling and no mods at all. I think the ATI cards all come with vivo included but don't quote me on that.
Edit: Man! Mikeguava is that oc on water or are you on phase change?

It's on a Pelt running loaded at around 5C - phase change is on the way and I hope to break into mid 800...
Pricewise I agree that the X850XT is the better card - BUT i have been going thru a total of nine X850 cards - to find my current card. On all the tests - the 3 PEs vs the 6XT I tested the Platinum Eds were clocking better than the XT. Obviously you can get lucky - but your chances a better with the PE if you are looking for XTREME clocks. Again pricewise the XT is the better choice
these were my STABLE results
XT:
600/590
573/630
551/630
565/610
X/X low
X/X low
PE:
591/625 (current card)
600/612
583/618
