View Full Version : Where do you get the copper block for a water block?

Every "do it yourself" waterblock article I read they say "just drill out the copper block" etc yet they leave out one CRUCIAL element, where does one procure a copper block TO drill out? I have done much work with wood in the past so I think I might be qualified to make my own holes in the copper even though it's not exactly the same and since my CPU problem has started occurring I think it might be time for a watercooling solution. So where would I get it?
Thanks a lot,
Alik

I bought my copper stock at onlinemetals.com (http://www.onlinemetals.com/)

They're good because you can get any size you want.. even custom cuts are available.. Nice prices too.

You can also get some at Dangerden (http://www.dangerden.com/)

Wow, nice place that onlinemetals.com is! Er one last question, what dimensions are ideal for the stock I should buy? I'm thinking 3/4 by 2 inches?

I got my copper from Online metals also. Unless you wan to cut out the but for the 'top' of the socket, I would suggest 2" wide which is a little bit more that 50mm (50.8mm). I got a foot long piece to I could chop it up to make what I needed. I think 3/4" would be thick enough but I guess that depends on if you are doing a cross drilled block or milling like I tried ( I wrote the shade tree machinist article). My latest block is simpler, it's a pice if 2"x3 1/4" x 1/8" thick copper bar with a 1 1/2" copper cap soldered on. It seems to work as well as my first machined block, 35C idle 40C load so far and was much quicker to make.

Almost forgot the tube is from a 3/8" sink hook up copper tube. The middle 'in' tube sticks in to almost the plate so the water sprays close to the core. The outlet is soldered close to the top. I had to put on same barbs to keep the hose attachment water tight but that's not on that pic.
