View Full Version : 9 volts ??
How can i get 9v out of my PSU?
I need the voltage to power up a s speaker system that require at least 1.0A.
Since i have some PSU's around i was wondering if it is posible.

i think you can take a 12v line from the molex and put a resister to take it from 12 to 9. im not sure as im not the electrical savvy

Don't use a resistor since then the voltage would depend on the internal resistance of tje speaker system which will vary.
You have two choices: voltage regulator or 4 diodes in series.
The most popular fixed voltage regulator are the 78xx series. In your case the 7809 would be the one you need. Since you need at least 1A you'd want to use two of those in parallel. Also cooling them with a heatsnik is needed. One of them costs around a $ and the heatsink (if you don't use your case for it) a maximum of another 5$ for one which can handle two of those I think.
The 7809 has 3 pins. Left one is input voltage (your 12V line), middle one is ground right one is output voltage (9V)

You can always ground it on the 3.3v rail instead of ground. Its gets you pretty close to 9v and if the draw is only 1A, it should be fine on the psu. I put bigger loads on some mighty crappy psus before.
great..thanks for the tips....
