View Full Version : cpu usage at 100% intermittently

Hi,
I have a 1.4gHz t-bird and ECS k7s5a motherboard running with winxp.
I notice that when I open up the "task manager" and go to the performance tab. The cpu usuage goes from one 100% to normal usuage and back to one 100% in repetitive intervals. It does this continuously.
Does anyone know what this means? Is my cpu a weird chip and should I return it or is it something with the motherboard? Or does no one have a clue like me. I think it's weird and it's got me uneasy.

I've noticed that Microsoft Word (Word 97, at least) likes to do that, and is independent of CPU/Motherboard used.
Word will use 100% CPU for a second or two, then to 0%, everytime something happens to it, e.g. window gets focus, window loses focus, something is typed, etc.
I'm not sure if this applies in your case though.

If your system works normally I wouldnīt worrie about that. I think itīs more a software problem than a Hardware prob. You could use EM without a folding client ans see wht cpu usage it shows. Should be something like 2% when nothing else is running.
Hope that helps
Don't worry I have almost the same config as you and it's definately a software problem :)

Yep...that's something to do with software.

It fluctuates? You must not be using F@H :D

try looking at the processes tab and see what app is loading your CPU up to that usage... this way, you will have an option to disable that app ( if not really that important... ) or set priorities....
if u are using any sort of cpu cooling software like cpu idle, you will get this guess i should change this to "could get this" instead of will, I have seen cpuidel, cause this o happen, with w2k sp1

hey, i'm using cpuidle pro 5.8 and never had this problem... i still suggest looking at the processes tab to determine what app is loading your cpu

If I might make a small recommendation?
Run SETI@Home on your machine. This way, your CPU will always be at 99-100% usage, youi won't notice any fluctuations, and you can join the fastest-rising SETI team in the world (59th and rising!)
(Laws of fair advertising, F@H chaps!)
