Sony is taking a $100 hit on it compared to MicroSoft's $75 and is $100 higher than MicroSoft's machine. It's not as high as the $499 that we were hearing but it'd have to be DAMNED good before I will plunk down that much. At this point I'm saying I'll wait until it drops a bit.

but it will probably make the money back from the cuts it gets on the games. think about it, how much does it cost for media and to make the game. Not a lot, so they make that money back that way. Plus on controllers and any other add-ons they decide to release for the system.

I see price change every day for next-gen consoles so its to early to tell the real price especially for Xbox360 first it was $399 then $299, $360, $499, and now its back to $299.
It says that launch price for PS2 in 2000 was $299 WTF, I paid $500 for mine when it came out first day and so did everyone else I know.
Sony may take $100mill hit but they will make it back in the game department and also games for the next-gen consoles will be $49 not $59.
You can always start speculating, lets first see what games come out for the consoles and then decide. If you have all your favorite games on one of them and its $100 more expensive you would be stupid not to get the console. Anyway I hope xbox is nicely modable again, just like mine now  then i'll get it. Oh and plz sony, a cell cpu on a pci/e card for my renderingfarm, tnx in advance :p

$500? Did you buy outside the US or from E-bay. I stood in line at Wal-Mart and paid $299.99

You got ripped.
Did you get a game or two with it, or any accessories? I paid close to $400 for my PS2 a few months after launch, but I got a game and a DVD remote with it.

that is the same way that m$ made money with the xbox, for a while they were losing money because of the parts etc inside of the system, but they made back that money quite easily with game sales.

my august issue of psm here states that it will cost less than 40,000 Yen (370$) in Japan and likely 299$ here in the U.S.
i'll take the best pic i can of the page if you have any skepticism but i still have the belief that the msrp of all consoles will need to be 299 or lower as many still find this pricey to start

Remember they are using those blu-ray disc, so they probably wont make it back as fast, especially if they use dual layer blu-ray on launch games

I'll end up waiting for at least both PS3 and the 360 to be released before making my decision, but I tend to go wherever Squaresoft goes (SquareEnix now).

They (not you) are probably wrong with the estimate for here. If its $370 in Japan we will be paying more, just like with the PSP. That would make sense if it was $370 there and $400 here though.
I'd pay $400 if its got a killer launch ap with it and if I'm not too busy playing 360/PC games. If its going to be way more powerful than the 360 (I seriously doubt it will be) then I'll probably get one first day too.
$500 = way too much for a console, but $400 for a launch ain't so bad considering you get a Blu-ray player and will be ahead of the tech curve when it comes to movies. I gues it'll still boil down to how good it is and how bored I am, though.

They might be switch hitters now. I think they're going both ways. Atleast they are working with MS now, so we'll have to wait and see what they do.

i would still suggest that the biggest thing to consider while looking over all the facts is that ps3 is set to be spring 06 as of now, which 9-10months off leaving quite a bit of room to play
I would like to back up psm but i've been a bit skeptical of a few things lately, including a Xbox360 minimag that came with one of my previous issues, along with the fact that i've already found one typo and misprinted picture in this issue alone makes me wonder.
Even without that out its a possibility that it could be 400$ (although i still hope this ends out to be false) and then it will still be a great deal as it looks like it will be able to play all media under the sun...excluding vcd/svcd/divx
I'll be in college when it releases but if i can afford one i'll definately get a preorder then probably look to take it a step further, ebay it then use the profit to get the system and games when its widely available.

Worng beacuse sony know japanese gamers will spend, money on game consoles so they can sell it for a higher price in japan (the Japanese's are loaded)
just like the Uk due too our strong currency, we will pay about £299 about $500 american. so where they make the money back is uk/japanese markets, and game sales...
So here's how i see it
Japanese - Overcharged
American - Lucky
British - Ripped Off
But gamers will pay for new consoles

Sony doesnt have to pay for the disks of games from other companies...

They said they found a way to cut cost on blue ray disk. Also I doubt they will need to use a duel layer of signel layer. No games today come even close to being able to take up one blue ray disk. As for price ill pay it. I mean heck ill pay it put linux on it and have one bass*** computer haha.
Edit: Also the PS2 was 300 bucks. its just it was so hard to get everyone was jacking up prices. Oh and sony owns 19% of square or atleast they used to. So I think thats who square will go with for the most part.

Funny, these consoles come with the equivalents to the new 520 ATI card and the 7800GTX nvidia card (probably even better versions than are out right now). yet buying those cards alone costs more than double the price of these systems.
Makes you wonder how much profit vid card makers really make off each card.

If I hear correctly then the old president of square is producing some games for the X-box 360. I think SquareEnix as a whole is going with PS3, that's at least where the next Final Fantasy is going.
Yeah the 360 is getting 2, yes 2, games from the ex-president of square-enix.

I paid 300.00 for mine and got it the day it was released in the US. I got Tekken Tag with it, I saat and watched that intro movie for like an hour. I'll be getting the PS3 the day it is released as well. Its just one of those thing I like to do.

By that logic the PSP should be cheap in the US, which it isn't. That is what I'm basing my statement off of and the fact that they will choose a number that is rounded and easy on the eyes of consumers to start with. i.e. $399.99 or $349.99 and not $369.99.
That and they don't want to lose more $$$ on it when they can realistically charge $400 here for a short time atleast. Sony is pretty friendly to the Japanesse market too.
Yeah the 360 is getting 2, yes 2, games from the ex-president of square-enix.
Yeah, he formed his own company and they are Xbox exclusive FF type games.
I'm talking about Square though. FFXI is coming out on the 360, its been confirmed and other games have been hinted but nothing confirmed.
It would be no stranger than Konami developing for the 360. They are making an original IP for the 360 (no MGS games).
I'm going to go pre-order now, see you there DragonXXX

I paid $299.99 for mine when it first came out. If you paid $500 for yours and didn't get at least 4 games with it then you got hosed.
:| im here in NZ where it cost over $1000 Ie $700u.s at the launch (Ps2 that is) (plus our wages are lower) thats with NOTHIGN! :S dont know how much it will be here. DOnt you worry, Sony will make an absolute fortune of the PS3! Dont they just get a licencing fee off the companys that makes the games. Plus sonys own games. It might take a good couple of years to make a dime but once it costs little to make the console and there under full swing they will be making close to that $100mil a year so no probs for them

Definitely. Its going to hurt at first since Sony is in such bad finacial shape, but it'll definitely be a cash cow again, in no time.
