the playback on my DVD is jerky. It's a 12x. I'm running window 98 se, 1.33 amd, 512 ram, geforce 2 gts. DMA is selected for dvd drive but not the harddrive. Will it make any difference if dma is selected on harddrive

Just one of the problems with DVD drives on computers I believe. I originally had a Sony 5x DVD with a RealMagic DVD decoder card(RealMagic is supposed to be the NAME in DVD decoders). Some DVDs played fine while others would play half way through and then start to stutter and eventually lock up my system. Some I could never even play. Did the tech thing and the news groups and just saw that it was a problem with everyone. Currently have a Creative DVD 12x with their Encore Dxr3 decoder card(uses RealMagic chip) and it is a great deal better. Still acts up with some movies and some I still can't play but if you go to the news groups you'll see everyone having the same problems. I just can't figure it out myself. Tried changing settings and turning things off in the background. Just doesn't help. Btw the 5x or 12x or whatever X only refers to fastforward and reverse stuff so it doesn't really affect your playback.
I was always of the belief that Hardware decoders were the way to go. But apparently they say if you have a faster computer then software dvd players are the thing. Supposedly they have better pictures and all. Seems weird. I think of it like a video card. A vid card is better then software acceleration. I do know that if I can't play a movie then I can normally play it with a software decoder. I tested it and the image does seem to be better sometimes but I just don't want to waste the card.
I had video issues on my VA6 motherboard and learned it was the choked system memory bandwidth that was causing me grief, not the dvd drive, drivers, or dvd.

I've had my DVD on the same cable with my DMA hard drive and my non-DMA CD-RW, with everything else being the same, and found no difference. I doubt the non-DMA setting of your hard drive is the problem. Unfortunately I can't think of what would be the problem.

im using a pioneer 16x dvdrom
and have used both a hardware decoder card (realmagic)
and a software player (asusdvd)
i found that the software produced a better picture for me
i have since sold the decoder card, though i have a fast processor
so this is a factor allowing for good playback
as for your jerky playback
is it on a hardware card?
or software?,and if so,what program?
also make sure you have the lastest directx u can get
makes it run better

It's software. I'm using PowerDVD 3.0. Directx 8.1a. The harddrive and DVD are not on the same cable. DMA is selected on DVD which helps a lot, but it's not like watching on TV. I selected DMA on harddrive but no difference.

powerdvd is usually pretty good with playback
i dont know about directx8.1,im using 8.0 and have had no problems
it could be a problem with your dvdrom
have u got the latest drivers for your vid card?

every drivers are uptodate. Except when I built this system, Windows98se installed its own driver for the motherboard, such as the AGP port. I did not use the drivers came with the motherboard. Should this make any difference?

could be the source of your problems
i believe that your mobo uses a VIA chipset
so go download the latest via 4-in-1 drivers and get them installed
they will make your system faster and more stable overall also
I used to get choppy playback, but it was board related. I hadn't installed my 4-in-1 drivers. I installed them, and it was still a bit choppy, so I did some research. I put my DVD drive (Toshiba 12x) on my UDMA chain (I love my A7V133!) set for ATA100 and BOOM! No more video lag.
