Alright my AGP setting until today was 4X.

In the Bios it is still set at 4X.

BUT:

My card info says it is at 1X and 3DMark2001 seems to back that as my scores are down 500 points!

The only thing I installed today was Powerstrip. I uninstalled it thinking that was the problem, since this seemed to have happened when I installed it an hour ago, but that didn't fix the problem.

Any ideas what happened and why I can't get 4X?

I am running Windows '98 also.

My computer also decided to take a dump and would not boot up anymore:(

This started after I installed those 21.85 drivers earlier! Either that or the Pwerstrip program I tried.

My computer would hang at the Win98 splash screen everytime I would boot. I tried to just reinstall windows, but no go. I ended up having to reformat my whole drive and reinstall everything.

Luckily my computer is only a month old so I didn't lose much.

Oh well time to start over from scratch, but what a pain in the ass:(

Oh yeah, also the new format/reinstall didn't help my 1X problem either.

Oops, one good note, the reinstall did fix my problem and I am back to 4X again.

I forgot to go and change it in the bios again;)

I am definately sticking with the 12.90 drivers from now on though!

Have you considered installing win 2000 on your machines ??? =)

some of the older (pre DetXP) drivers always set you to 2x. After that you needed to install the patch. Vias 4in1 driver also needs the AGP driver to be installed in Turbo mode or it will be 2x AGP.
