View Full Version : cooling Voltage eXtreme
hi all,
i'm thinking of picking up some
OCZ EL DDR PC-4000 / 500MHz / Gold Series / Voltage eXtreme.
if i'm pumping in 3.0 (or greater) volts into these,
will this require some special, elaborate, direct ram cooling?
or is it enough to have good air flow in the case?

Personally I would set up some kind of direct cooling for them if you are going to be running over 3.0v constantly. They will handle the heat if it's only for test sessions though. Also are you keeping the heatspreaders on? If so then direct cooling would be more neccesary.

I just put a fan over mine and it cools it properly and I can touch it without being burned or feeling the heat. I ran 3.5V through mine.

when u say u put a fan over yours, do u mean like an 80mm or 120mm?
if so, how did u mount it?

well i was planning 2 put as much juice into them in order to acheive a max
stable over clock (given the the ram in question it'll b > 3.0 more than likely).
as far as the heat spreaders go...i read that they act more like heat trappers, i might be removing them i dunno yet.

Nice assortment of ideas for cooling your ram in that post, including one from fellow member, felinusz. He started a thread in the cooling section displaying his "fan clip" idea which is both simple and effective. It is linked below.

I run 3.2V through mine without any trouble. The only cooling I have on them is any excess air from my 120mm Sunon on my xp120, and there's a blowhole up top exhausting any hot air. That's about it.
