Firstly Welcome to the forums, hope you enjoy your time here. This is one of the best groups of people.

To answer your question, it appears the the file assoications have been lost. If you right click on one file of each type and select open with from the menu. Select mspaint from the list, making sure the always open with this app check box is ticked say open.

I get that on odd occasions after booting up, but they always jump in in a couple of minutes..........Do you have SP2 installed for 2000?

You might want to try rebuilding the Icon Cache...

At a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder.

Type attrib -h shelliconcache, and then press ENTER.

Type del shelliconcache, and then press ENTER.

Click Start, click Log Off Username (where Username is the name you used to log on), and then click Yes.

Log back on to your computer.
