View Full Version : if you had $450?
If you had $450 to spend on a mobo, cpu, and video card what would you do, no accessories needed. retail cpu to include the cooling. this isn't for overclocking and is for some form of gaming. I'm just curious to see what you guys have to say.
I want to play Counterstrike Source, and battlefield 2 mostly, just something faster than a 1700+ oc'd to 2.4 ghz, and 9800 pro

You can find a relatively cheap S939 board and this (http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=A64-3000BP) Processor for $117
DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb Socket 754 @ 103.00
eVGA Geforce 6600GT 128MB AGP 4X/8X Video Card @ 159.00 (and 15.00 MIR)
AMD 3200 Newcastle Athlon 64 @ 190.00
Total: 452.00 - 15.00 = 437.00
This would give great performance for the money

he still would need a heatsink, so it would pry it up a bit more. so he would pry be better off with the retail version instead.

I still dont recommend goin the 754 path, cause its been pretty much done for a while. 939 still has quite a bit of life left, its more "futureproof"
how about
DFI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $116
Update AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Integrated into Chip FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3000BPBOX - Retail $146
this setup leaves me about $188 for the video card...I'd really like to only spend $150 for one that would surpass the 9800 pro.... what do you guys think about the mobo cpu combo and how it would perform next to what I already stated the 1700+, 8rda+...

Whats what I thought... But the 754 is going to be the moble platform now (or so I've been told). Still might be better to go 939 and pci-e.

Get a PCI-E 6600gt or perhaps a 6800.

Why on earth would anyone reccomend a socket 754 newcastle when a 3000+ venice setup is cheaper?
ewiz.com is selling the 3000+ venice for $120
Newegg.com sells the dfi lanparty board for $120
Total $240.
Refurb radeon x800xl= $230
Total= $450
That will be significantly faster
