quick nvidia mandrake question: help?

linux mandrake 8.1
i recently installed the tarballs for my geforce 256

got the big ol' nvidia eyeball looking at me when i boot.
but.............when i try to change my resolution from 640x480 to 1024x768 it asks to test it, i select yes and the screens basically goes black, forcing me to power off and one.

any ideas where to go??

Sounds like a bad refresh rate. Either choose a different monitor or manually specify the refresh rate.

What drivers did you use. You need the nv driver for GeForce 256, TNT, TNT2 etc. The nvidia driver off of Nvidias site is only for the GeForce 2 xxx or GeForce 3 or some of the newer TNT cards. Not sure tho' try checking it out
