Hi, I was wondering if there was any tweaking that i could do to help speed up my dsl, i went to dslreports and tried the suggested twaking, but that didn't help very much, so any suggestions would be greatly appreiated.

Thanks

If you goto www.speedguide.net theirs several suggestions they give you about tweaking. You can also get a program called Ispeed that can tweak your setting quite well, you can download it from cnet.com .

Well what kind of speeds are you getting with your DSL?

I have Verizon 768/128, and I've NEVER had speed problems. Server permitting, my speeds are ~650+/140+Kbps. Guaranteed. Every time. Usually I get around ~800Kbps though. (Note that is Kbps, not KBps. There is a difference of a factor of 10, making it ~80KBps)

1 megabyte every 11.3 seconds is a beautiful thing. ;)

I have Qwest DSL with 640K d/256K u. I usually download about 50-60K/sec in Win98SE, but my rommies in 2K SP2 usually top out about 80K/sec. I've already applied a few tweaks, but it hasn't sped anything up. So I'm just kinda buggered. But still 60K/sec doesn't suck too badly. Unless anyone knows any killer tweaks.

Well, there are ways to completely uncap your DSL speeds (Much like cablemodems). I don't know the specifics, but I do know that you must have some sort of routing box on the outside of your house (I believe they install these when you get your home wired for ethernet, but I'm probably wrong).

if anyone else knows of some tips please post

thanks

phlubb: i proly have a routing box since my house ie wired w/ ethernet cabling, do you think if i uncaped my speed it would help? thanks

I seriously don't know. =\

I was at a friend's house, with a few other friends, and one of them pointed to a box outside the person's house we were at, and said pretty much what I told you, that you can completely uncap DSL and get T3 speeds if there is enough bandwith available. I didn't persue it any further because we were gearing up to go paintballing, and we didn't have the time. By the time we got home, I had forgotten about it, and he escaped before I could question him further.

Sorry I can't help, it was a friend of a friend thing, and he's the kind of guy who calls you if he wants something from you. So none of us has his number. It was probably hogwash, because you can't even buy DSL faster than 1.5MBps, and as such, the wires probably wouldn't be able to handle T3 speeds. I'll try to get a hold of him through mutual acquaintances. YOu may want to do some websearching on the key words "DSL" and "Uncapping" and "T3". You may just turn something up!

Well I was taking up the garbage and noticed a telphone box and opened it up. ther wasn't much just wires and what not, although there ws one cabinet that was labeled DSL so i was prettyy sure that the guy who ame to fix my line opened this up. Nothing really tho :( just wires and wht not.

Anybody tried an RWIN setting above 64240 and had it actually work? I run Win98SE and tried the "fix" on speedguide's site but it still won't work. This appears to be my main bottleneck as it limits my throughput to 321 kbytes/s receive according to the tcp/ip analyzer thingy. As soon as I exceed the 64240 setting everything goes wacky because the registry doesn't recognize the setting.

I run my rwin at 80000 and it runs great, but I have a fast connection around 3400kbps on a regular basis. You do not want your rwin to exceed your lines capability as you will have a lot of lost packages that will neet to be resent, negating any increase in speeds aquired by raising your rwin. If you go to dsl reports they have dr tcp which will allow you to change the default win98 and win98se default of 8900 to anything you wish.

Those are some good speeds I get like 1 meg every 12-15 sec.

But with cable I get 550k per second. I've gotten as high as 1Meg per second.

If you wanted to test out your speeds goto:

http://speedtest.rochester.rr.com
and click on speed test. You will download a bogus 49MB file to test out your "SPEED" - Good luck!

Thats a much nicer picture!! :p

wow I was realy thinking about replacing my Cable with dsl and now i dont think so

I get around 700kb/sec d/l and 45kb/sec u/l

it just disconnects alot in peak hours so that really the only drawback

Anyone know how to "uncap" DSL modems?
Right now i'm getting speeds of over 900kbps, i can only imagine what speeds i can get with it uncapped

Now is that K bits, or K bytes?? It makes a difference!

For those who do not know:

There are 8bits to 1 byte, so if your getting 700k bits then your speed will be around 87K per second. understand?

My cable modem is getting 550k bytes per second. If I were to compare it to you guys it would be: 4.4Mbits per second.

Whew!
