Sorry, got some newbie questions....

I want a powerful computer (just like everybody else) Sorry to say I'm not heavily interested in overclocking (yet), I just want something that will run some large programs almost constantly, keep cool and stable. I've chosen AMD for their reputation, and I've been happy with my 1.4 Ghz Athlon, but I got a good offer and recently sold it. So I'm stuck with my old PIII 800, Help

I'm starting fresh and I'd like to know about dual processors, from what I've read the Athlon isn't meant for it, although I've found Tyan boards that support them. Is this the route I should take if I want to run some multiple huge programs without a glitch? I know there must be different versions of each processor, is there a page I can familiarize myself with them? If this has been brought up too much please direct me somewhere where I could read more, my search didn't turn up much. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forums.

AMD reaslised a version of the athlon with the MP prefix, tis is the chip design for multi processor boards. It's not that the athlon chip was not design for multi processor use, it's that untill latley there has not been a chipset that supported it. Check out AMD's site for more details.

What sort of apps and what os are you looking into using?

I use a computer for most of my DJing jobs and the programs I use just suck up all the cpu power and almost lock it up, I use a wireless modem to download songs I don't have and I do that while I'm DJing, I figured if I had dual processors I could accomplish both those tasks at once without so much lockup. I have an extra 1.4 athlon and a crappy board, which I might just end up using. I really want something top notch. I'll take any suggestions. Is AMD comming out with anything sweet any time soon?

Athlon XPs are sweet but their price isn't....

Well, there's the MPs...they're the ones designed for SMP.

I don't know how much it would help you, though...downloading stuff doens't really eat up that much CPU power.

well basically I just need some overkill, I cannot have this computer lock up, aka the music cannot stop or "skip". I'll look into both the MP and XP, I know nothing about those, are they socket A? Thanks for the advise...

Hey okdoak, you want a dually-capable Tyan mobo with 2 AthlonMP's running on it. That machine would be able to handle anything you throw at it. That's cool that you DJ. I am interested in that sort of thing - could you point me to a cool website you visit for DJ info, etc? Thanks and good luck with your dually DJ machine.:D

Building Two machines and connecting them might also be an alternative...

Now there's some good thinking. Get a somewhat decent laptop for your non-playing tasks...that way you wont have a chance of the music skipping at all! :)

Simple crossover cable between them and you're all set.
