I have a Gateway 3520GZ (M210 series) with:

Pentium M 725 (1.6 Dothan 400fsb 2MB L2)
512MB PC2700 DDR RAM (expandable to 1.25GB)
60gb 4200rpm hard drive
Integrated Intel Extreme 2 graphics with 32mb shared memory
Multiformat DVD+/-RW/CDRW (8X DVD/24X CDRW)
14.1-inch Ultrabright WXGA TFT widescreen display
Intel Centrino PRO/Wireless LAN (802.11b/g)

I noticed lots of notebooks come standard with ddr333 ram, why is that? Is it mainly to save the money? Well we all know the Dothans have a 400 fsb so could I upgrade to ddr400? Other thing is that it has 256mb internal (non-removable) ram and a 256mb stick in the sodimm. I dont know what speed the internal ram is.. so if I can run ddr400 would it be underclocked if the internal ram is slower?

you can upgrade it to ddr400 but it won't do you any good becasue the cpu memory ratio won't change, if you put anything higher than memory ddr333 it configure it and work as ddr 333.
are you sure that 256 isn't removeable ?

The memory is almost surely removable, just not easily accessible. You would have to take apart the whole laptop chasis to get at it. I really wish that laptop manufacturers would not put less than a 512MB stick in a hard to get to spot, so that upgrades are easier.
