View Full Version : Does ASII wear out over time?
I noticed that initially my loaded CPU temps were 22-23C above ambient but over time (a couple months) that has increased to 26C above ambient. Reapplying heatsink compound (this time I used the cheap radio shack stuff just as a test) and my temps are again down to 23C over ambient. Has anyone else noticed this behavior of ASII or heatsink compound in general?

I don't think so. I don't even think you really NEED to replace the AS2 when you reinstall the heatsink either.

Over a period of time it will rare out a bit and just take off ur heatsink and if u see that there is not quite enough ARII then just apply it on again!

I have noticed this same thing on my system. After about two months my temps starting gradually rising. I haven't changed anything, fan speeds are still the same. Room temp is pretty much constant. Haven't added any hardware.
Took my heatsinks out, cleaned the ASII off, put new on, back to normal. I'm running aluminium heatsinks. This stuff is silver. The watercooling guys are always talking about galvanic reaction to two diferent metals and causing corrosion and particle buildup. I wonder if we're starting to see the same thing in ASII.
If it is, I'll go back to silicon grease. ASII is too expensive to replace continiously.
If that's true then it would be a problem for everyone since most everyone has either a aluminum or copper (like my Glaciator) heatsink. As I said I put the cheap Radio Shack heatsink compound on as a test. My temps are about 1C higher than a new application of ASII but I can live with that for now.
Maybe I'll try ASII again at a later time. Luckily you get a small packet of ASII included with a Glaciator and you would be surprised how far a little bit of ASII goes. I can't image what anyone does with one of those tubes of ASII. Same is true of the Radio Shack stuff as well but its so cheap I just buy a new tube every year or two just to be sure it's "fresh".
