Just got my Vantec P3-5030 heatsink in today. I need a little help on installing it correctly. The following questions refer to these two pics (click on the links):
Pic 1 (http://www.et.byu.edu/~azonic/vantec_1.JPG)
Pic 2 (http://www.et.byu.edu/~azonic/vantec_2.JPG)
*In pic 1, WHAT IS that little white square? Do I remove it before installing? If it's to uncover some pre-applied thermal stuff, do I want to clean it off since I'll be using Artic Silver II?
*In pic 2, what is the BLACK braket for? Where does it go? I know the SILVER clip thing is to hold the heatsink to the processor, BUT DO I clip it on CONCAVE UP or CONCAVE DOWN?
*Also, I've read the articles on using a CASE SCREW to remove the old Intel heatsink pins, but I've also heard some people crushing the core when they did this!:dead: WILL heating up the heatsink w/ a blowdryer help soften up the paste that's already there and help PREVENT THIS? Any other pointers on removing the old heatsink would be helpful.
*ONE more thing: WHERE should I place the CPU TEMPERATURE probe? (I will be getting an Asus P2T-Cable (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1281402150&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1002722998&indexURL=0&rd=1)that hooks right into the mobo)

0 replies???? weird......anyways, I'm a duron guy, and I know nothing abotu p3s, but I can answer your first question. The white thingy is a thermal pad. If you have artic silver, then take the pad off (don't scrape it off, just try to peel it off), rub the base with alcohol to remove any more residue, and apply the artic silver. if nobody here can help you with puttingon the heatsink, consider asking the manufactors for directions

Frodo, I did go to Vantec's website but could not find any installation instructions (maybe I didn't look hard enough).
Also, someone in another forum said the white square was thermal TAPE and that it might be more preferrable to the Artic Silver; are they WHACK? Everywhere I've gone people say Artic Silver is THE BEST. What gives?

Hello
I have the same HSF 1st off
get rid of the white tape and apply a thin coat of arctic silver
the black thingy take it open your window and thro it at the 1st guy you see:D why not
and your lead I put mine next to the chip not the core do this before you put the arctic on so you cna make sure that you have a good fit with the hsf and core

azonicbruce>> Can't help ya, sorry, I see that u got answer from RocknBull.
I just want to ask is that a Slot 1 CPU?

I'll try to answer some questions that weren't answered. The white stuff is indeed preapplied paste. Clean it off with Isopropyl Alcohol or Acetone (Nail polish remover)
The black bracket is used to help stabilize the processor. It fits over the top of the chip and hooks into your URM. The silver clip should go down like this \_/. Wanted to make sure I didn't get concave up and down mixed up
The processor is a slot
And last... If it's a flat headed probe, tape it as close to the core as possible with electrical tape or so. Put the heatsink on and check to see if it raises it in any way. If it does, take it off and move the probe out more. If it doesn't, keep it there. The closer your are, the better
Oh yeah, the bracket is indeed trash. If you're paranoid about it falling off or so, experiment a bit to get it on correctly

HEY, thanks for all the great replies!!!:D
Before I came back here I WAS able to find an installation guide;
SO, for those of you who have this processor and HSF (yes, it's a Slot1) here's the link:

Yeah, I figured that it'd be better to scrap the square and go with the Artic Silver; reading the "MUST READ" article at the top of this forum confirmed that (the one on amdmb.com)
** I'm a little confused about what ya'll said about PROBE PLACEMENT.
"next to the chip not the core"
"as close to the core as possible"
So WHAT exactly am I going to attach the probe to? The heatsink or the CPU?

The CPU is probably better. The heatsink is possible, but I personally think it's harder

Holy Crap!! That was the SCARIEST THING I've EVER done to my computer. I'm talking about the case screw method to remove the old heatsink from the PIII Slot 1.
YIKES! I thought for sure I had broken the chip in all sorts of places.
But HURRAY!:D I was able to FINALLY get the new heatsink on nothing broke I guess 'cause my computer's working FINE right now. I haven't got a thermal probe yet for the CPU (I was outbid) but I'll keep searching for another one.
ANY suggestions for a good probe besides the Asus P2T cable?
ANY suggestions on my compontent placement/setup? TAKE a LOOK at the following pics:
