i have an p2 266 i want to get a powerleap pi-p3 or a evergreen proforma se, they are both 766 mhz but the evergreen are including 128mb of pc133 memory can i take my 66mhz memory out and put this in?can i overclock the celeron they have in it?
You should be able to use your PC66 with it, no problem. Celerons slower than 800mhz run on a 66mhz bus. However the Pc133 is likely to be of much higher quality than your PC66, and anyway Pc133 RAM will run at 66 without difficulties.
As for Overclocking it, almost definately not gonna happen! Your board would have to have FSB options greater than 66mhz, and during the days of the P3 266 most boards had only choices of 66, 75, and 83mhz- depending on the board. So your OCing choices would be 862 or 954mhz, and you probaly have no way to adjust voltage either. The 766 just doesn't give you much leeway for Overclocking.
Good Luck!
welcome to the forum.
i might suggest getting a new motherboard and chip. i think you would find better stability and better performance if you did this instead. it might even cost less.
check out www.pricewatch.com
they have some great deals listed.

is air cooling good enough or should i water cool? i was thinking of a new mobo and cpu but dont i have to reinstall windows?
if your thinking of buying intel chips then air cooling is usually enough. intel chips run cooler than amd.
buy a good heatsink though. I have an alpha pal 6035 which is perfect for most intel chips.
since i'm a fan of intel's bx chipset, my suggestion would be to look at abit's bx133 raid motherboard. you might want to ask for a few other suggestions from other members.
for chips intel's p3 1000e is doing great as an overclocker. i just got one. if you want something a bit less expensive you could go with a celeron 850 or 900.
about the windows reinstall. you might not have to reinstall windows with a new motherboard but its probably a good idea. it takes about 30 mins to install and if you need some help getting started theres a lot of people arround here to ask.

For the price of that powerleap you can pick up a new motherboard and CPU with fan and heatsink. It's more economical to get the new board anyways. You can get faster memory, which is dirt cheap now. You will have more upgrade options (replacing just the CPU and not buying another expensive Powerleap kit.)
As for the Windows re-install, if you are running Win98, you can boot the machine up in safe mode after you install the motherboard, go into your device manager and take out EVERYTHING and then go to add new hardware and it will find everything and update the drivers as necessary. It works 90% of the time, and if it doesn't you will have to re-install Windows anyway.
But you will be happier with a new motherboard and CPU. It will give your machine alot more longetivity than just a Powerleap kit.

i could buy a mobo and cpu which would be above the cost of the powerleap, then add the mem, then ill want a new vc, it adds to the cost more, for what i need the cpu upgrade is cheaper, better. i only have ata 33mb/s hdd, then if i dont add a fast hdd it'll slow the whole comp down. i dont have the win 98se cd to reinstall if i need it.
i wouldnt get the powerleap.
you could get an intel motherboard for $50, 128 megs of memory for $6, and a celeron 800 for $43.
your going to eventually want a new video card and hard drive anyways. you might as well get a board that would do them justice.
just my 2 cents

where are you getting these prices? chaintech 7AJA2-$77 cpu-900mhz duron $58 mem-128mb-$30
Go to www.pricewatch.com
Companies advertise prices for computer parts here. you can find really good deals. I found my p3 1000e here for $165.
Also check out the classified ads here at oc.com.

If you end up buying something from the clasified ads then you might want to make sure your buying from a member of the forum.
oh yea if you want the duron 900 its listed for $46.
yea i want to apologise if i sound overally zealous on this post. i just stongly feel that you'll be getting a better deal if you don't go with the powerleap converter.

why whats wrong with the powerleap? how about the evergreen?which is better? i dont have the windows cd, i dont want to have to reinstall it.
I don't know anything about either upgrade kit, but I gotta agree that you are better off with a new cpu/mobo. Prices are great right now, even if you go with relatively new stuff, and you'll have more room to "grow."
The one thing that could be a big downfall to that is this: if you don't have all the win98 installation files on your hard drive (c:\win98 usually) you might NEED the windows 98 cd to reinstall.
Even if you have to save until you can buy the os, cpu, mobo, and ram I think you are better off.
Whatever you decide- Good Luck

i have these apps in c:/win98 deltemp, extract, format, oemsetup, save32, scandisk, scanprog, scanreg, setup, smartdrv, sucatreg, wb16off, xmsmmgr
these bin files-dossetup, oemsetup, suback, suhelper, w98setup,
these readme- intl and setup
do i need the disk to reinstall windows?
My win98 pcs have 181 mb of data (779 files, 29 folders) in the win98 directory- so if thats all you have, I would say theres a good chance you'll need the cd.
You could try finding oses on auction sites like ebay- win98, 2000 are often listed.
I don't mean to discourage you from upgrading, I just don't like getting a good bang for my buck: I have put some screaming pcs together out of $200 and old junk laying around. Start with a good mobo/cpu and some ram. Then just replace older stuff as the budget allows!

You shouldn't need to re-install. If you can get it to bot into windows, even in safe mode all you should have to do is into your "device manager", under the "System devices" find you "PCI bus", select it and click remove. Win will ask you if you're sure you want to remove it, click "yes". Once that's done Win will tell you you have to re-start your computer. Click "ok", and the system will re-boot. When it reboots, it will re-detect all your MB, PCI cards, agp card, etc...
