Today, I've heard that you can partition a drive using Win2000 without losing files. Is this true? I dont know really know anything about Win2000.

Yes. You can partition any unused space. You can make partitions on a drive as long as the partition is smaller than the free space, and the drive is a dynamic drive.

You might be able to change them with something like Partition Magic....not positive it works with Win2k as I haven't found a need to try it yet.

Go to control panel, then Admin Tools, then Computer Management, then Disk Management. It will open a program that looks strangely familiar. (it's basically Disk Druid) You can take your hard drive, partition the free space into the size that you want. (once again it must be smaller then the amount of free space you have left of course)

One thing to remember, if you do this, remember to add 64meg to the size of the partition that you want. Windows will make either 54 or 64 meg of that partition disappear because the dynamic drive data will be help on that area.

I'd give you more specifics, but my MCSE books are at work. There's actually a whole chapter in there pertaining to this. Windows 2000 will amaze you at the things that it can do with a dynamic disk. You can even take one hard drive and turn it into a software raid array.

Kingslayer's right. It's not nearly as hard as it sounds. You can actually play around with it a bit to figure it out without having to commit to any changes so you don't screw anything up.

Windows has been able to resize partitions since NT 4.0 (maybe even 3.51 but I don't remember). It was actually even easier to do in it, my opinion.

Boot drives not included, Win2K's software RAID is very comparable to hardware RAID in performance. I was very pleased with it when I used it for a while.

what u can do is partition into free space on the disk, u cannot resize, PQ partition magic and PQ volume manager are what u need if u want to not reformat and create new partions without existing free space
