View Full Version : Need help positioning my sub *pic*
I'm pretty confident I know what I have to do to get my sub sounding the best again, I just want everyone's opinion here. Usually you have some sort of trick or idea that completely blows away rearranging my whole room.
Right now my speaker setup stands as this:

The 5 small box like objects represent the speakers, as the large one under the L Shaped Desk represent my sub. I know taht subs will sound, much, much better when it has something large or hard to kick off of, or simple a thick wall, being in the corner of a room. In my little illisration, its under my desk...with a peice of wood behind it, and it doesnt sound the same anymore. Its all weak..not nearly as deep. Is there any way i can position it without having to re-arange my room? Its a very very heavy desk...I actually have to get my stepdad to help me move it. Thanks!
well i think subs sound louder in corners, but they dont sound as nice
it's up to you, another spot might be along the wall down from the right speaker?
Will it still be as effective if its all the way over there compared to beign right by me? Since it will be in the corner of a room...probaly?
Personally, i'd center the sub so its exactly between the right and the left speakers.

Perfectly centered is usually bad. It's probaby losing some oomph to your bed.
I would center it but because of the shape of the desk, i cant get it under it nor can i get it near the wall :(
Ahh .. where you have it at the moment is ok. Isn't there really much space to move it around?

put it at the left end of your desk ? almost middle of your desk, then turn it in a 360 circle until you find the right directional angle for the most UMPH!!
let me do a paint picture as to how i "think" your oom may be better :
Well, what makes the sub so weak is it has nothing to kick off of...i mean if i put it up against the wall, BOOM!!! or the corner of my room BOOM x2!! Its so much deeper, louder and more clear. Why I cant realy do that is the position of my desk....though the suggestion of the right corner of my room, i plan on trying that tomorrow when no one is home! Here are some real pics...

Notice how i cant push it back any further due to my desk not giving clearance...

See how its in the middle of my room? out in the no where...its under the desk, compare tot he first picture

To me this setup will put you more int he "middle" of your set giving i beleive a better "all around" sound

Is your deks seal. or just a top on some legs? cause if it is sealed put it in the corner under your desk no ?
Its on top of very, very tiny legs, if i put them as high as they go, i gain about 3 - 4mm at most.
Edit: And yes the 4 corner speakers are on the wall, in the corner aimed at a diagonal at the ground.

The sub looks rather small, you probably wont get a HUGE amount of bass out of that anyway. Therefore, I'd just keep it where you have it or put it in a corner.
Well it may be small but it has a pretty nice kick to it. I used to have a small desk and the bass used to be much deeper, cleaner and louder as i said previously. Now that i got a bigger one i cant put it in the corner under my desk due to my desk being so big. It's pretty deep outside too

i say move your room around as i showed, see how it sounds, wouldnt be too hard, then again i move around my house furniture monthyl, get bored easily
I vote for the corner as you get the most sound reinforcement there. If space is an issue you can always send to my house and I'll find a spot for it. :)

why such a big desk? It doesn't look like you have much on it.

I have my sub to the left of my desk. I don't like to confine my speakers. I also try and not have them sitting flat on objects. Most speakers sound best if raised up off something. Each speaker is tuned for a certain hieght, and the better speakers will have stands. Try lift the sub up in increments and see if it helps. Even moving the sub out from under your desk if wire/space allows. My crappy creative system sounds like poop when I put it under my table desk. When it sits just to the side of it and a slight angle so it don't reflect off my wall I get reasonable sound from it. Bass is non-directional. The port will force the sound to direct off the wall and defeat the "all around sound" and possibly muffle/distort the sound it can produce. The higher range speakers are easier to deal with since you point and listen. If I can get my audio engineer buddy online. I will direct him to this thread for some input.
General rule is either 1/3 of the way along the wall or in a corner.
