A few months ago I got tired of looking at my boring old case and decided to go caseless and demolish my case.

I really wanted to design and make a cool case that I designed. So, after a few weeks of doodling and drawling I came up with an Idea that I fell in love with. After a few more added details and changes here and there, I called up Captain Slug and asked if he could design my dream case in Milkshape 3D. Without hesitation he, Captain Slug, started working on the model.

After many late night discussions and many Ideas put out onto the table and rejected we came up with a final idea. The following model is what I finnaly decided on in the end. None of this could be possible without the help of Captain Slug:

This is what the final case will look like when I'm done. This is my first project of this scale and because I dont have quite the money to get all the tools to machine alluminum and metal and what not, which would equal to over $300, I asked Captain slug to machine the base parts for this project. He said that he will only charge $50 ontop of material costs and for professional work, thats not to bad.

Below is a list of materials that will be used in this project:

With the machining of the base model beginning this coming week I thought it was a good idea to start this thread.

*Edited Plans Changed*

The drives, such as CD, DVD and what not will be covered in a garage door configuration. More pictures will be posted when Products and machining begins.

:) Comment as Needed :)

Damn that's quite the get up, much more than I expected.

The plumbing on the side are you going to be using something like copper tubing or the simple clear plastic tubing. Albeit copper would be awesome but plastic would be much easier.

That inventory list alone took 4 hours. Trapezoids are annoying things to measure...
I'll post photos of my progress sometime next week.

you should go ahead and have that WCed

Blaine: The tubing is going to be regular tubing for water cooling, attached to the case via bracktes.

S Random: If you read the second post it says it will be Water Cooled :)

Production has slowed down due to Cpt. Slug having other customers whos proojects are time consuming as well as him having a new part time job :) This is also why his other projects have stopped. if onlyu I had a bandsaw, tablesaw, and drill press.

Man, that looks so... so.... SCI-FI!

It's gonna be a pig to make. And it looks quite expensive...
My kind of project! :)
But seriously, it looks great!

Thanks bro. Its really nice to have people stop by and
encourage me.
Its not going to run me as much as I thought it would...no more then 250 for it is made out of alluminum and plastic/acrylic. Im excited to get started on it.
Thanks for droppin a line.

Hey look, an actual photo!
http://www.captainslug.com/modding/son1990/1.jpg
What you see above is the largest and most difficult to cut piece of plastic I have ever done. It took 30 minutes to setup, test, measure, and feed the tablesaw the huge 1/2-inch sheet of polycarbonate accurately enough to get the cutting done precisely. Each side is cut precisely at a 10 degree angle, which gives this case it's unique shape.

I was not able to get anymore work done today because it is above 100 degrees outside (again) so the garage has been an uncomfortable 110f. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and if it's bearable in the garage I will be getting more work done before my evening shifts this weekend.

Some design changes are taking place due to various factors.

1. The eheim is friggin' huge and won't fit inside the reservoir as currently designed. So instead it's going to be mounted externally.
http://www.captainslug.com/modding/son1990/3d_pump.jpg

This will make the reservoir much easier to machine now that it won't need electical pass-through or a water-tight hatch.
2. Extra length is being added to the tubing on the right side of the case to accomodate the pump, and some aesthetic features.
3. I will be making a custom comboniation power cord for the pump and power supply.

I'm feeling much better about this project. It's still going to be complicated, but atleast now it involves nothing but processes I'm confident I can do without outside help.

son1990 has changed some more details concerning the cooling, but they won't really effect what I'm doing so I continued work today. It was quite time-consuming, but after 5 hours of work today I've cut out all of the pieces for the drive cage assembly.
http://www.captainslug.com/modding/son1990/2.jpg

It was time consuming because all of the pieces required precise angled cuts. As will most of the parts in this case, but these in particular all needed to be cut from 1/2-inch thick sheets of polycarbonate which feeds really slowly. Once drilled, detailed, and assembled the cage should look like this...
http://www.captainslug.com/modding/son1990/3d_cage.jpg

After that is done, the next item on the agenda is getting the aluminum L-channel frame pieces cut and drilled. Once that is done this will actually start looking like a computer case.

More internal changes are being made but I will be continuing the machining process on the case structure itself.

The drive cage side pieces are currently being worked on by a local machine shop since i don't have the equipment that is required to make thetrack cuts for the door mechanism.

I'll explain more on that later.

Updates?

I have asked captain slug to put this project, as last priority to all his other projects for a few reasons but mainly because I would like to finish Screaming Deltas before this is done.

Captain Slug

The custom power cord is mostly finished. I ran out of time before work so I'll have to add the protective clear tubing later.
http://www.captainslug.com/modding/son1990/3.jpg
I was going to use spacers along the whole length until I realized I would have to drill 6 holes in 50 black nylon washers for it to work and that prospect turned me off of that idea. So instead the cable is braided and has spacers every 9 inches to keep the braid tight.

The cord is extremely flexible as it is now. So if you want to be able to wind this thing up really easily I could skip adding the clear tubing.

Too bad that you couldnt add some EL wires as well. It would make an interesting effect.

Your right, it probobly would have had a nice effect but, I liked the simplicity and the look of the plain white wires.
