View Full Version : T Minus 1 week and counting
Well, the word from Stanford is no longer "soon". It is next week.
Huh?? Well, I am writing about the infamous version 2.0 that is due to be launched. The client appears to be stable enough for an official release, or so they say. I hope that they worked out some of the bugs that were causing problems for the last beta version.
Some of the features that we know about- (If I forget any the list will be edited here.) This is, so far, a rehash of the information posted to date.
*Caching- I'll say it again CACHING!!!
*HTTP proxy support for those of you who can only connect via http
*Team Numbers- This should help avoid mistyped team names which amounted to quite a bit of lost work.
*It minimizes to the system tray.
*Multithreading. There is currently NO dual support yet even for 2.0. They will probably not allow multiple instances of the 2.0 client either, but dual support is a priority for them since they are running duallies themselves and would like to take advantage of them.
*When you click on your username in a running client it takes you to some sort of stats page. Hopefully they will have improved on it because the page it took you to was nothing but a number.
*A page for each team and user, part of the improved stats system.
Here is the URL - http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=32
*Some of the non essential source code will probably be made available, though nothing that could allow for cheating or corrupting the work.
Some other things-
*The last beta, which is the one I tested was not 100% stable for most of those who tried it, though some managed to let it run for days on end with no problems.
*There was a serious problem with a full screen viewer that caused most systems to crash.
*There were also some problems with the installer. It didn't always want to work and it may even help to reboot before even trying to use the installer.
*Support for two or more CPU's is not yet a reality.
*The beta version asked for the team name when it was supposed to say "Team Number"
*That's all that I can remember right now
Screenshots of the client are in the Sticky thread above called "We Now Have our Magic 2.0 Team Number" or something like that. or just click on the URL below to get to the thread.

how are you the only member for our team? should we be getting the client or what?
Right now it's just showing beta stats. I'm just the only one that ran the beta version of the client and turned in points for the team, that I know of. The beta stats don't count for anything anyway. Not sure if the Ver 1 stats will be counted.
If the stats are reset, we must recruit like crazy, we CAN realistically hold 2nd place!

Well, that is until Ars and [H] take notice.;) Be prepared when 2.0 comes out for them to switch from Genome. AFS is currently propping up TPS an [H] has moved a huge amount of power over there as well. I expect that a lot of that power will return to FAH when a stable 2.0, especially one that supports multithreading, comes out. If the stats are reset then they will almost definitely go for it. Should be a good show! We'd need a couple hundred more folders to make a serious move against either of these teams.
I do think that we can give DSL Reports a real run for their money with a fair amount of recruiting though. :D

If the stats are reset...and the client is stable...and I get an e-mail telling me the in's and out's I will through some computers your way. BTW I need to hide the icon, and it can't degrade computer proformance. My e-mail is ecelebr@bgnet.bgsu.edu I could have about 40 PIII 933's going your way...the rest are for seti ;)
I have a 1G PIII win2k that is not and will never be OC'd that I can test it on for average stability. Everything else is OC'd and winME or 98. It seemed unstable to me but it could have been more sensitive to the overclock that I had going. Not sure.
Hopefully someone will come up with a way to hide the client.
40 933 PIII's would be awesome!!! :D

It depends...I don't think we can realistically match [H], but since they're competing so closely with Ars in Genome, AFS might not send a whole lot of power to folding. We'll see.........
I'll think we have a lot of room to grow still. Don't think that 5000 wu's per day in the near future is out of the question and with a real strong drive we may be able to meet [H]'s current production. That may take a while. Of course, once they see that they will be all over it. ;) I think that this is within the realm of possibility.

how can we go about recruiting more people? im going to ask my roommate if he can donate his comp everynight. he has a 700 P3 i think. every little bit helps... so i will be folding at 2ghz constantly.
we really need MORE users. like, a whole lot more.
Recruiting: If the stats are reset, I think we'll be able to get a lot more people on the forum folding for us, if they think that we can be in 1st or 2nd place overall. Get family/friends to fold with us. "If you have money, buy more computers", or something like that.
Version 8 of the Folding2 beta was posted to the site, but there was no mention of it yet in the official group. Anyway. I will try testing it out on a few machines to see what's up with it. I already noticed a couple of things.
1- The installer actually worked this time :p
2- Fullscreen mode STILL crashes my machine and crashes it hard.
3- I think I need to increase the voltage on my main machine. It's currently OC'd from 1.0 to 1.4G at 1.7 volts. It runs fine most of the time even with the client running but every so often it does something weird and I think that a little boost in voltage is enough to handle it. - This has nothing to do with the fullscreen mode crashing, though.
4- The proteins are much, much bigger than previous beta proteins. Not sure how long they will take to complete yet.
5- When I shut down my computer the client doesn't puke out a windows warning message.
6- The current beta protein is EngHomeodomain whatever that means ;)
7- There is a screensaver version that I have no interest in testing.
8- Read Number 2 again, because if they don't fix this problem you will hear a lot about it. Personally I think they should simply eliminate that feature and let someone else come up with a solution.
OK. That's it for now. I was going to mess around with it on the laptop whick is a PIII running Win2K and I think it may be very important to the test since we can then see how well the client can be hidden. I will try to hide it in WinME as well.
There is still no word on whether the stats will be reset.
4 hours later....Still running strong. Couldn't mess with it too much and haven't found a way to hide the client yet. yet. That's in ME. Haven't tried 2k yet since I wasn't here but I suspect that it will be easy in 2k running it as a service.

Need to hide it in Windows 98SE. That is what the PIII 933's are running. Oh and by the way If everything goes as planned count me in for 500 work units a day. ;) I think you can hold your own...you just got to have access to a few computer labs.
ahh 40 933 would be sweet.
ok now for the q's
1. is 2.0 officially out? and are real stats being counted for it.
2. how do i keep my username. do i type ebola or ebola (www.overclockers.com)
3. do we lose our current wu's. this would be sad.
4. should i upgrade now or wait a week or two
5. does this mean electron microscope wont work anymore.
thanks

Only the beta is out, with separate beta stats.
2. how do i keep my username. do i type ebola or ebola (www.overclockers.com)
You'll type in "ebola" as your user name and "32" as your team number.
3. do we lose our current wu's. this would be sad.
The stats may be reset, but nobody is sure yet.
4. should i upgrade now or wait a week or two
It should be coming out in the next week, I would say to upgrade then, but we'll have to see how it runs on a large scale.
5. does this mean electron microscope wont work anymoreProbably, but I'm guessing that a new version should be out soon.
thanks. make sure to make a big annoncement when everything is up and running so the whole team can upgrade.

I haven't tried win 98SE. I did this in WinME which should be identical but I now have it running as a service almost completely hidden from the user, unless they use the ctrl-alt-del forced shutdown command. Then it will show up with the other programs listed. To do this I had to edit the registry after installing the folding client(did it with the regular console/screensaver/all in one version. Have not tried the text only version.)
here is the key where it is located-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices
I created a string value that I called winFAH and then provided the location where the client was installed
C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe -service
I also deleted the shortcut that is automatically placed in the startup folder by the installer so as to avoid conflict. It just completed a frame and appears to be working, but then it's not visible and the tray icon is hidden so I checked the log to be sure and it is showing up in the log file.
I don't know how stable the client is but it's been running on my machines now without a lot of trouble after I figured out the quirks, most of which are associated with displaying the client. There may be a little trouble getting it to connect at first. I don't know if the connection problem is with the text only version or if it's with all versions. I don't recommend the text only version at all given the fact that it was never beta tested, at least publicly, and there appears to be some problems with it.

The client appears to be stable enough for an official release, or so they say.
i guess they were wrong
