View Full Version : Good Back Up utility ?
Hi all I am looking for a good program that will allow for disaster recovery, and back ups of selected files.
Is drive image good are there better.I really need the recovery features most.So any tips are prethanked.
I use Norton Ghost to make an image of my system. I have an image of my system with Win2K configured with all drivers etc. About once a month I make a second image (Overwrite the second image each time). This allows me to have a fresh install backup as well as a fairly recent backup. The downsides of this method is it takes a lot of HD space and you must have your drive partitioned or have a second drive installed. Good point is that you can have your system back up and running in 15 minutes. I was thinking of trying Adobe Go Back. It is like the restore feature in WinME. I am worried that because it is always running it will slow down system performance.

I've been using Ghost for a while now & I'm really happy with it. With Win2K how do you boot into DOS to get into Ghost? Are you using FAT32 or NTFS? I've almost convinced myself to go Win2K PRO but it's hard if I can't have the luxury of Ghost & I do want to use NTFS.

I am able to boot with a floppy disk and run ghost off the same boot floppy. My HD is formatted NTFS and Ghost sees the drive just fine. I made the boot disk by -
format a: /s
on a friends Win98 machine. I then copied the Ghostpe.exe file onto that floppy and added an autoexec.bat file to load ghost after the system boots.
autoexec.bat file just has the line ghostpe.exe.....It will load ghost automaticly then.
I am using Ghost 2001 so I don't know about older version reading NTFS drives.
Thanks a whole lot ve6jhc!!! Do you know if it supports RAID?

hey dude, check out my thread "pretty good deal" if you consider buying ghost.
Yes the ghost that I have (Ghost 2001) supports raid. I have the Abit KG7 Raid MB with a pair of 40 GB maxtors raided up and a 30 gb Quantum on the non raid controller that I use for backup.

YEAH BABY!!! Now I can comfortably go W2KPRO & RAID with all the comfort of GHOST even if I have to buy new software.

Is the Go Back utility in Norton Systemworks 2002 the same as GHost 2001? I mean do they work the same with RAID & NTFS? It's the only one that is currently available here & the sales person doesn't know what the product can do.

Go Back and Ghost are two different programs. Ghost is for creating an image of your hard drive. Go Back is to create a known "good" date on your system so that if you install a bad driver etc you can restore your system to the "good"date. This only works for software settings you change...The ghost protects from a hard drive failure (it you are imaging to another drive and not just a partition. With Ghost you can restore your image on an unformated drive in about 10 min. With Go Back you have to still be able to boot into Windows. The best solution would be to use both programs. Win ME and WinXP have a built in Go Back (System Restore) feature built in. There is a speed hit for using Go Back as it monitors your system.
Thanks ve6jhc. I am familiar with Ghost & have been using it. Thanks for the Go-Back info.
