View Full Version : 6800 GT + Battlefield 2 = Madness :(

As always I turn to Overclockers to get all the good answers, I'm hoping you guru's can assist me on this one.

I run a Leadtek (with the giant metal HSF) 6800GT at totally stock speeds, no overclocking. I have a P4 3.0 running at 3.6Ghz and 1 gig (512x2) of ballistix PC-4000 running at stock speeds as well. The 3.6 threshold is on the lower side of stable for my chip. I can do 3.75 but I have to throw a lot of juice at the chip to do it. 3.6 is the happy spot, universally stable. The system is rock solid otherwise.

I installed the demo for BF2 when it was released and saw the ugly black squares where shadows used to be. I then installed the 77.30 drivers that came with the demo, and everything seemed to run beautifully.

Then I purchased the full version of the game and began to play, and somewhere along the way, I began to discover some visual corrupting in the game. As far as I have tested, it is NOT heat related. Under Load my board never goes beyind 65 degrees. My motherboard is also cool and without heat issues.

The GLITCHING has to do with vehicles and some of the gun/weapon models, and I THINK with either the dynamic lighting or shadows settings because the glitching that I get is usually in the direction away from a light source.

This is NOT like "The ground texture turned to a bunch of red and white X's" or some other texture anomaly that often times signals a heat problem, this is something different I think.

Let me explain: I can see a tank rolling around on the ground and it looks fine, it has a shadow, and so on. I walk around the tank and I see a tank and its shadow, no surprises.

But that same tank when its near a building or under an awning waiting for someone to hop in, will suddenly start to have these weird flashing lines or polygons behind it. Like long lines or thin triangles flashing on and off behind it, like its got something to do with a shadow that is trying to be cast behind it (or to the side or wherever).

Now I dont get this effect from buildings or trees, but sometimes if I pull up a certain weapon I can get the same type of weird glitch happening on this time its on me carrying the gun. Example: Spawning as an engineer or assault is fine. But as soon as I switch to the SNIPER lets say, I get these weird black flashes (they are like long, thin trinagles) that flash out in front of me for a second or two, always falshing, and usually moving. God I wish I could describe it better.

These flashes and flickers of "polygons" generally point in the same direction as a shadow would be cast. So as I TURN around the flashing changes, worse when the light is behind me.

If its a vehicle I am walking around, as I turn around the vehicle the falshing remains the same because the vehicle (in relation to the light) has NOT changed.

Does anyone have *ANY IDEA* what this might be about? I have never had any graphical issues with any other game.

AS AN ASIDE: yesterday while playing on a ranked server the game froze for a few seconds on me, and then when it came back, my gamma in game appeared to have jumped up. That map that takes place on the little islands at night? Well it was bright as day.

Weird things are happening. Yes, I have a decent 400+ watt powersupply and no I do not overclock this Leadtek card, this is the first game that has caused it to go all crazy.

I've tried the 77.30 drivers, the earlier drivers, and the latest 77.73's I think, all have the same problem.

All resolutions show it, and changing shadows/lighting settings doesn't appear to affect it (alhtough I have NOT tried LOW detail mode yet with none of those options turned on).

Anyone experience this? I haven't tinkered with the card or tried to replace the HSF with Arctic Silver.....<shrug>
Help :(

I have the game and run a 6800LE and have had no problems. I had the same problem you did untill i upgraded drivers. You may need to make sure that you got all the old drivers off. Do a reg fix to take care of it (you can dl program to fix your regestry). Other than that, I would say that your card is over heating despite what it says it is running at. Take the side pannel off and put a fan blowing on it. Also, you may have a bad connection between the hs and the card. Try taking it off and putting AS5 on it. Should help lower the temps.

Hmmm, I'll give it a shot. Question: What drivers are you running now?

Try the new 80 series Forceware drivers that got leaked. I'm running those on my 6800GT and unless I overclock it too much I don't get any errors beyond the typical clipping issues inherent to the game. Don't be suprised at occasional glitches, but I definitely recommend updating your vga, chipset, and soundcard drivers. This game is fun, but it definitely has issues.
Also, version 1.1.2 is out so be sure to download the latest patch from EA.

I had to upgrade my soundcard (MB) drivers....sound was fine but MIC didn't work at all (non-USB). Haven't had to touch the chipset or bios and really dont want to (probably introduce more problems than they solve).....will look into the leaked 80 drivers.

Since this is the ONLY game that exhibits any problems (even maxxed out FARCRY with HDR cranking and framerates in the toilet wont cause the card to glitch graphically) I'm kinda leaning against the thougth that its a memory or gpu overheating issue..

My friend has the same problems with his 6600gt. I've tried everythign from some 6x drivers to the 8x drivers.

I made a video of the type of stuff he is seeing.

I have a Leadtek 6800GT, using 7.30 drivers and a fresh install of BF2(no updates) with no problems what-so-ever.

Hmmmm, well thats not the same as what I'm seeing. If you look at my pic above you see the black line and the tan-ish colored line sticking out from the back of the Bradley's turret? Imagine that flickering and flashing and disappearing...maybe in another 1/2 second a similar line appears 1/2 an inch down on the screen.

If i move in front of the tank, i can't see the lines.

If Imove to the other side the flickering re-appears. I just kept hitting SCREENSHOT in the hopes of capturing a frame where the problem was onscreen..I got lucky that time.....I've just tried upgrading to the beta 80 drivers, we'll see if that helps.

I'm also going to drop the game down to min options and see if it doesn't go away.

Just a thought, try backing off the overclock a bit, try it a stock speeds even. You did lock agp/pci bus right? How about a few more system specs, answering questions without them is like asking the magic eight ball, just guessing.

Well first its Windows 2000 SP4, I know some may say "Oh thats why!"...but I kinda doubt it since Xp/Pro share so much when it comes to this, plus the video drivers are the same between OS's.

I backed off the card down to MUCH slower speeds and the problem persisted. I installed the 80. drivers, and the problem persists. It doesn't appear to happen in other games, just BF2.

Here's the system:
ABIT motherboard running 512x2 PC4000 Ballistix at 240Mhz at 2.8v
3.0 P4 at 3.6 (not a prescott, the other one..3.0c...not a Northwood is it?)
Seagate 120gig SATA HD
Leadtek 6800 GT A400 with the 20lb copper cooler on it :)
Generic keyboard, onboard ac97 sound (drivers updated 1 month ago to latest). Bios has never been upgraded.

When I went to install the new drivers, at windows bootup the FOUND NEW HARDWARE wizard runs twice, not once. I tried RegCleaner and nothing with NVIDIA in the name seems to be there, I ran with VGA 16 colors for awhile and rebooted. But it finds the thing twice, I'm wondering if I manually need to go into the registry and just start deleting stuff :(

PS: The shadows in this game running the 80.xx leaked drivers are MAJORLY messed up, the ground shadows float "around" on the ground beneath the vehicle but the vehicle itself has no darkness to it..ie: the shadow on the ground looks ridiculously fake :)

I'm kind of at a loss. I'd hate to spend $150 bones on XP Pro only to find the upgrade didn't fix the problem.

Them lines your seeing is coming off that building behind the tank somehow the graphics (or pixels whatever) from the building is attaching it's self to the tank's graphics and it's stretching the thing. Could be a graphics driver problem you could use the System Machinc 5 trial software and do a reg repair using it's reg cleaner.

It's not that bad piece of software to be honest best bet it to uninstall the drivers you have now. Do a reg clean then install then 80 series see what happens I get problems with my games like starcraft if I scroll up the map. It's like draws it in square layer things. But it's hardly noticable if you dont look hard ha ha.

Try turning off dynamic lighting and mess with the shadow settings. Have you tried reinstalling the game?

Try using the 80.40 Forcware and tone down the Texture settings, because that takes the bigest hit on your vid card.

Was this ever resolved?

Nope.

I've just learned to live with the occasional glitching.

I haven't tried the latest drivers however.

Hmmm... My Battlefield did not like my Xtreme G drivers that I had on my computer from Benchmarking. I switched back over to the normal standard Nvidia drivers that were on their website and it solved all the problems. Funny thing is that I pull more FPS in games from the standard drivers, but I cannot even get close to my 3Dmark score with the standard drivers.

If all else fails, do at reformat.

Try WHQL Certified drivers. I tried the new 80.40s and I had flashing stuff and shadows and reflections were all screwed up so i switched back to 77.72 WHQL and have had no problems except a slight drop in FPS. But you don't need to worry about that... I only have an FX 5200.

EDIT: Now that i think of it... It sounds more like a problem with the game... try reinstalling it or updating it. It sounds like a rendering engine problem. couldn't tell you any more than that... Almost definitely software though. nothing more than an annoyance that may be solved with a good old update... i dont know for sure though
