View Full Version : 1.4 at 74C
OK am I on the verge of disaster here or what?
I just installed new 1.4 Athlon today and have a Alpha Pep 66 on it with Artic Silver. Case is open with cold air blowing in.
Sys Temps at 34C.
CPU Temp 74 C.
I have a KT7A-R board and I couldn't get on the retail Athlon fan. So I put the Pep 66 on there.
Please help.

get a better cooler and fast most people won't let their cpus get over 50c, and guess that your temp is in idle its not that far from the max being 80c(or is it 90c?).
So get a better cooler or go to watercooling(if you have the time and moey). :D

are you sure it is sitting on the cpu correctly? Your cpu temp should be a lot better. You should be around 54C according to radiate. Are you using a delta 38?

by all means, make sure your heatsink is mounted correctly. I'd also try to move more air through your case, even that temp is too high (but not high enough to explain your CPU temps). Also, make sure your fan is working, as I myself have lost a 1.4 to a non working fan on my heatsink.
Not sounding good is it. BAH!
I have an Alpha Pep 66 on ther right now, I guess I will try and swap that out with the retail fan that came with it.
The Alpha is working fine so I will give the retail fan a shot.
I was having major troubles trying to hook the retail fan to the Abit, that's why I put the Alpha on there.

if you got the nice chip, you should get the nice hsf.

Thats one toasty athlon chip! It sure wont catch hypothermia in the winter!
Those temps are scary. Stop using your computer and get it sorted as they are borderline to doing your cpu serious damage. It does look like you have a heatsink seating problem. Ensure that both the cpu and heatsink base are clean. Ensure that your TIM is good eg AS2. And finally, check if your heatsink is making good contact. This can be done by doing the following...
Clean the base of your heatsink and clean the cpu.
Apply a thin layer of AS2 to the cpu ONLY.
Seat the alpha onto your cpu carefully and clip it in.
Unclip the heatsink and check the base.
If you heatsink has a full small square of AS-2 on the base then you are ok to reseat it. If there is none or very little AS-2 then you should investigate further.

Don't Athlons require so many pounds of pressure? Chances are the clip that is with that Alpha just isn't pushing down hard enough. But then again I don't have a clue and I could just be all wrong.
Everybody for the support through my times of struggle.
I pulled off the Alpha and it turned out that the Artic Silver I put on was a tad bit too much. Damn
It had flattened out on the die and I think it was affecting thecontact with the HS.
I hardly put any but apparently that was not the case. So I ran down to 7-11 got some rubbing alcohol, cleaned the hell out of it, and decided to try the Retail fan that came with it. (I wasn't sure the Alpha could actually handle the 1.4 Temps)
Put the retail HSF on (After some major struggles), I am runnning at 46C right now. Sooooo much better than the 74/75C.
Now I may just have to start a little OCing after I settle down.
Thanks again for all of you guy's support during my time of stress.

no problem, I think something was wrong with the way the Alpha was mounted though. Its as good as the retail and mounting is really the only way to explain a 20C increase over what the temps SHOULD be. But glad to see the bird in safe territory now.
The bird was on edge along with my nerves.
I think it was due to the Artic Silver that got smeared during my attempts to connect the HSF to the board. When I took the HSF off, it looked like a silver egg hit the processor.
Like I said, I scrubbed it down with rubbing alcohol and Q-tips.
I really don't feel like messing with swapping out the retail fan with the Alpha since it was such a big pain in my butt to get them on there.
My luck, I would crack the bird, bust a HS clip, and break the mobo clip. All while bruising the heck outta my fingertips.
Thanks again guys.

Am I completely off base or wasn't there a problem mounting the PEP66 on KT7 series boards??? I'm digging deep into my memory, and I never really paid that much attention to it cuz I never owned one of the KT7 series boards, but I thought there were warnings all over about using the PEP66 cuz it wouldn't seat properly, something about the lil rubber feet I thought, but I could be totally wrong on that too... hehe
Basically, I'm just spouting BS with no real verifiable data to back it up... :D
Peace
John
No, you're memory is right. There was a ton of talk about them fitting on the Abits. People doing mods to make them fit.
My first go round, I put it on the KT7A-R with no problems whatsoever. There was enough room, the clips fit easily...no problems.
This time around, the mobo was still in the case when I was putting it on and with my bigass hands and little bit of work room, it was a pain.
But with the mobo out of the case, it was a cinch.
Now I am thinking so much about it, should I put it back on and replace the retail hsf that is on there now? I don't remember what the Pep66 supports. Will it be fine on the 1.4 t-bird?
IF I do that, I will want to lap the Pep. Any suggestions for what grit paper to use? Should I lap the T-Bird too?

I'm not sure if the Pep66 is enough with the stock fans to cool a tbird, maybe with a Delta 38CFM? It would probably work. As far as lapping goes, I normally wet sand with 400, 600 and 800 grit and soapy water on a piece of glass. You can get the higher grit wet/dry sandpaper at the auto-parts store, I use 3M Imperial. As far as lapping the T-Bird, I've heard of people doing it, but I don't think that I would want to. Just too dangerous, and though the 1.4s are down to just over a C Note, that's still a hundy I wouldn't wanna spend twice. I'd say lap the heatsink and then follow the Arctic Silver guide for putting on ASII, should be fine.
Peace

The PEP 66 is still a good heatsink if I´m not completely wrong. Perhaps you should put on a better fan like the 38cfm Delta or the 40 cfm Y.S.-tech which would be my personal choice.

First... Were there any little rubber pads on the bottom of the heat sink?
If so... Take em off.
Did the heat sink get hot when your cpu was @ 70+c?
If not, you were not getting good contact.
If so, your fan is not strong enough.
It should get pretty warm, but not "ouch" hot.
Even with a 20cfm fan you shouldn't have been over 60 I'd say. Keep trying and be very careful not to crack your core.
