Hello, need some help here. This is my current setup....
6 Computers on my home network, 5 desktops and a laptop.
Linksys cable modem to
.
Linksys WRT54G Firmware Version 4.00.7
.
Port 1= Computer 1
Port 2= Computer 2
Port 3= Computer 3
Port 4= To
.
Linksys 8 Port Switch Model #EZXS88W
.
Port 1= Computer 4
Port 2= Computer 5
I have been using WEP, i have SSID Disabled and i also use MAC filtering. I also run a software firewall as well. I have been hearing how WEP isn't very secure and WPA is a much better source of security.
I'm not too familar with it but i decided to give it a try, i logged into my configuration, enabled WPA TKIP and typed in a paraphrase and saved my settings. As soon as i did that my wireless network dissapeared. I opened up network connections and searched for available wireless connections but it turned up nothing. I tried adding a new network connection and tried logging on with the paraphrase i setup to no avail.
I couldn't get it to work at all so i reset the router and enabled WEP again. Am i missing something here? Any help would be appreciated.
your wireless card will have to be WPA capable too. Try to update the driver and see if it is.

Thanks for the reply Kendan,
Yeah it's supposed to be compatible, i checked on that last night. I have the TrueMobile 1300 WLAN PCI card, and i'm not the only one with this card to have this trouble. I did some searching and found some people with this card having trouble with WPA and most have no trouble at all. The people having trouble have not found a fix yet. Oh well, i'll start searching again.
First of all, if you have ssid broadcast disabled, searching for wireless networks will turn up nothing. Windows' built in config utility relies solely on the ssid broadcast (I'm assuming you're using windows. Correct me if I'm wrong). If you're using a wireless computer to change the router config, you're going to lose your connection as soon as you apply the new security measures because you don't have WPA set up on your NIC. You need to add a wireless connection manually. There you can set up WPA on the computer side. If you end up buying another PCI card, I suggest getting a linksys one. Their products work well together.

Yes i'm running windows, i will try setting it again using my main computer. I tried setting it manually last time with no luck. I'll give it another try....

Thanks for the help Kason. I set it up, i'm sending and receiving packets and i have excellent signal strength but i don't have an ip address now. In the wireless network connection status it says "Acquiring network address". If i click on the support tab under connection status the address type says "Invalid IP Address". I'm connected to the network but my laptop doesn't have an ip??
EDIT: Now in the Wireless Network Connection Status it's saying "Limited or no connectivity". Any thoughts?
Make sure the dhcp function of your router is turned on. Try using the windows repair function too. That'll renew your ip address.

Yes DHCP is turned on and i did try the repair function, still nothing. It just hangs on the renewing of the ip. Just shows 0.0.0.0 for the ip. Strange
Try uninstalling the hardware and reinstalling it. Make sure you have up to date drivers. Also try unplugging the router for a couple of seconds then plugging it back in.

Well tried all that still not working. After googling my pci card i'm finding a lot of people having problems with WPA so i think it's a compatibility issue. I guess WEP will be suffice for now, i keep a pretty close eye on my network anyway. Thanks for all your help Kayson, greatly appreciated :)
