never used linux before, I'm gonna dual-boot it with 2k this weekend. Can I install it over 2k on a dif. part. and just do a 2k repair?

You need a different partition for it.
install it on a different partition and, to save yourself some potential problems, don't use lilo on the MBR, install it on the partition that you put linux on...
you can then use the NT boot loader to get to linux..(nt boot loader can be ...stubborn... at times)

Oh, I definatly was going to go on a different partition. I'm definatly gonna stay ntfs on my 2k part.
2k and linux should coexist happily. You wiull need two new partitions - a root partition for linux itself (I would reccommend >1,5G) and a swap partition (ie a swap file of sorts). Swap file should be 64 - 256 MB depending on RAM. I had 128MB RAM 192MB swap; 384Meg RAM - 64M swap. No probs
