View Full Version : Variance with Cermet Potentiometers?

I am gearing up to do the wouteral Vdroop and Vofs mods to to my IC7-G, and have noticed after setting my Potentiometers that they have changed their values some from last night when I set them.

I assume this is due to temperature change? Am I correct in this assumption?

I set my 500K cermet to the max value I could achieve which was precisely 498K. I assumed that value was within allowable error, but today i measured it and it is showing a value of 489. Is this "drift" critical?

What I am trying to get at is will this drift or change in K value cause issues with my mod, or is it within an acceptable range? I understand the mod, and understand the how and why of it, but am unsure how sensitive or critical exact K values are. I guess i need a little reassuring before going headlong into this.

BTW, I am also doing the caps mod, and will be implementing that first.

a 10K shift? I suppose that wouldnt matter much where 500K is concerned, it's only 2% of it, but that is a pretty big flux, I'd measure it again right now to see what it is.

I hope this thing isn't bad. That's why I asked becasue I was thinking that was a pretty large shift.

The variance is supposed to be +-2% I believe.

I just measured it right this second while writing this and it now reads...

497K.

Whew, I'm loosing my mind here. That thing was 489K. I checked it and rechecked it lastnight.

So the history of this thing over the last 3 days has been 499 set by me the first night, 489 the second night, and now it reads 497.

If this thing is out of spec, it's not giving me any warm cozy feeling. These Bourne Pots are supposed to be pretty high quality pots. They have a cluctch built in to prevent any damage, and this particlar version is of the worm gear variety. They should be extremely reliable.

I do have experience with electroics, but am not up on the rwsistence -vs- temperature issue. I know it changes, but by how much and what is a stnadard variation I have no clue.

Thankyou for the reply. I am going to wait and see what kind of info comes through before making any mods to this board. I can't afford for a 2 dollar part to cost me 2K in damage. hehe
