View Full Version : Sorry..can't help but gripe about something stupid :(

When I first started folding weeks ago(stanford says 47 days of cpu time) I could have cared less about competition and stats. Well as I am rather extremely competitive in sports I have sunk into competition mode...can't wait to upgrade my secondary system from the k6-2@500 to boost my production ;)

Well my tiny gripe is this..while I understand the point behind helping out the new folders by donating a spare machine to fold for them to quickly boost thier stats....trouble is that I noticed tonight one of the recipients was almost ready to pass me and they haven't been in the group very long (i have over 600 WU's now btw) I see other post a thread exclaming 500 WU's etc etc but I haven't as I could careless if any knows how many I have. I started folding and was in like 60,ooo+ place and after working hard to make sure my system was up 24/7 cranking out is 1WU a day to makeing sure my newer system was staying connected to my ISP so it could upload its WU's while keeping an eye on my older system so that I could set it to upload asap once it had finished its WU.

Ya my system's doing the tough work, but you'd be surpirsed how often I've stayed awake much later to ensure both systems got thier WU's sent in as soon as they were through before going to bed.

So far I'm averaging over 100 WU's a week and have been proud to be advancing my rank within the team and F@H in general.

In short in the interest of competition shouldn't their be a limit on HOW MUCH help the new members receive? While (at one time)I wouldn't gripe if i recieved some extra help, but at this point I prefer doing it on my own due to what the point in hitting the home run if you knew the bat was corked?

Just food for thought

hehe. well i think some of the guys were just trying to get new people to join the team. right now i have arround 860 wu and i've been folding for over 6 months. probably closer to 8 or nine months. :D

i only have one computer and i let f@h run in the background. my only F@H goal is to pass up as many people who quit the team as i can. i dont like seeing zero production up at the top. its gonna take awhile but i'll get there.

f@h is cool but evey once in awhile i have to play video games too.

I have to say that I worried about this when I saw just how many wu's we were knocking out over that three day period. It is pretty big.

atleast all of the units go to help out the team. really though if you have a good machine you can get 100wu a week.

I agree totally really hate seeing Stanman at the top with zero production...but it'll take us forever to get ahead of him...there are alot of zero production in the top 100 team folders :(

Laterz..breakfast is ready and have to be at work soon

I understand what you're saying. I've been helping out the new guys, at the expense of my own stats because I think that once a guy has 500+ WU under his belt it's hard to walk away from folding. A lot of people (about 68%) of those who have joined the team have dropped out for whatever reason. I started out folding on my main computer and gradually brought three more into the fold because you get hooked on it. Getting people up to speed quickly may help to drive a commitment to the team. Hopefully it's the kind of commitment that will cause them to stay up late to make sure that their WUs get sent like you do, Tithulta. That's dedication! (I've done that too, and it's also the first thing I do every morning!):D
As far as seeing the non-producing members on the list, we need to remember they made a (sometimes huge) contribution while they were with us, but I personally like to sort the stats by the weekly column to see who's producing NOW.

Sounds good to me, but I must admitt, that I was a little shocked myself when I saw our new members rushing through the ranks with a production of 100+ WU´s a day. I just think it´s a little bit unfair competition....but never mind if it´s for the team :D

hell, i was the first guy that got folded for by the team... i was going to continue folding whether i was low rank or high. i agree its unfair that i got 400+ WU's in a week. but, i have done work on my own, and my goal is the same as others'. i want to pass up as many 0 producers as possible. i have done 150 or so WU's on MY OWN in the past week. this is on an 800mhz tbird, that is not used at night because i have other proggies running.

its not like it's hard to really rack up WU's, you just have to get down and do it. (and have a relatively decent machine). im one of very few of the top 150 that are using just 1 machine. most i see are using at least 2 different machines to fold. so if i bumped ahead of you, just turn both on, let em go for a day, and ill be out of your way :-)

Also being one of the recipients of some donated folding time, I see where you are coming from. I also posted a note about passing 500 WU not for self promotion but to encourage the team by showing that an active member is excited about hitting a milestone.

I am as competitive as the next guy but it is also nice to get boosted in to the 'thick' of things with the help of others.

I can say this, that after I get some more WU under my belt, I'd gladly donate CPU time to a newcomer. I think it is a nice gesture of teamwork as well as helps the person stay involved.

Just my thoughts :p

Thanks for the post, Dunga Bee, and cowanrg too. My decision to help out was born out of my "newbie" status on this site. I wanted to get involved and help out in a way that I could make a contribution.

I like it when people post milestones as they do help to generate interest and excitement. After the brief spell of negativism we had here, its nice to see people getting excited again!

To add to the "positivism" :p , I just received my new case, Duron 750 (that'll be changing soon), mobo, and memory for a new Win2000 Server / Folder. I'll be putting it together tonight and getting it folding ASAP.

More CPU power is good

Hey DB- who is your avatar? I've been away from the comics scene for a couple of years. Looks familiar but I can't get a handle on him...

Cheers for another new folding box!

See now this is the family atmosphere I've missed in the last few weeks! Thanks everyone and I completely agree with the part about getting new members into the thick of things. Makes me want to get more boxs online folding so I can keep ahead of them :D

Welcome all newbies and yes i do have 2 machines folding even could 2-3 more going although I know 1 of them likely wouldnt be a 24/7 box (brother-in-law). Course my finances are shot completely thanks to my transmission deciding it only likes going backwards. $850 +$250 to install it. What's worse since I have no savings and i desperately needed the cash i had to take a LOAN! :( out for it. Dunno when I'll ahve spare cash to buy the rest of the components for my other 2 ecs k7s5a's...although one is my dad's upgrade so it only needs cpu and ddr ram.

Anyone have pc2400 ddr yet? help folding time any?

i think this was a big success. After a weeks time, Dunga Bee and cowanrg are still here. :D

My avatar is "The Vision" who is a member of the Avengers.

Can change his density and such...

IMHO possibly the toughest superhero of all time;) .

I'm not real in to comics but I always loved that guy :p

I agree it has been a success. We're not just folding, but overclocking, helping out others when we can and basically, being part of the "family" here.

Wouldn't have it any other way...Fold On guys...

I am still running PC 133 in my ECS boards. Had some laying around and went with it. It would be interesting to find out if faster RAM would make a fair enough difference.
Sorry about the transmission. That sucks.

From some older posts I have read RAM speed makes almost no difference in folding times. I'll look to see if I can find those posts, but the basic gist was that it was almost totally CPU dependant (no memory or HDD effects on speed).
