I am attempting to switch over to intel and I am wondering which motherboard to buy? As the topic says I have a 640 in the mail and I want a motherboard that is priced reasonably (~$150 USD) and will allow me to OC. I was looking at the Abit AS8, but I see it has voltage problems. I am not really into soldering. So, I think the AS8 is a last resort at best. I don't care if I have to use DDR2 and/or PCI-e.
Sorry to sound like such a noob, but this is my first Intel project EVER. I have been reading up, but I am still unclear about mobo choices. Thanks for the help.
What voltage problems does the AS8 have? I have a buddy that is running one and his is fine. About the only other choice is the Asus P5P800 if you want AGP and regular DDR.

I heard the vcore droops pretty badly. I am open to all suggestion (no matter ddr2 or PCI-e) as long as it is pretty close to my budget. I am going to have to buy RAM and possibly a video card no matter what.
Here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50940) is a list to all the mods that can be done to the AS8 and it talks about the droop problem.

your choices
Abit (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ABIT_Socket_LGA775.html)
Asus (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ASUS_Socket_LGA775.html)
DFI (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/DFI_Socket_LGA775.html)
EPox (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/DFI_Socket_LGA775.html)
Foxconn (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_copy_of_Foxconn.html)
Gigabyte (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Gigabyte_Socket_LGA775.html)
MSI (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/MSI_Socket_LGA775.html)
I would recommend the Asus P5ND2 SLi Deluxe nForce4 SLi or MSI P4N Diamond nForce4 SLi
*Note this would of had been better off in the mobo section*

I would have put it in the mobo section, but I didn't know which one would be the best to put it in. If this needs to be moved...please move the topic.
Thanks for the links. The more I look at the Asus P5P800 the more it looks like I good option and I'll even save some money.

the P5P800 also has droop problems. Not as bad as the AS8 though.
I've heard the DFI 865PE-TAG does not have this droop problem, if you read http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/archive/index.php/t-171817.html. I haven't had first hand experience though, but I'd like to try.
the DFI 875P-T seems to be the most proven and popular hybrid motherboard out there, so i'm gonna suggest that to you

This one is a little bit higher priced then you indicated your budget is for, but it is getting pretty good reviews. Might shop around. Someone might have it on sale.

I concur, I've seen alot of success with that board!

The 875P-T is a great mobo. I really like mine. At stock speeds and mild OCs it is rock solid. At more extreme OCs it starts to get real picky about what mem it likes. And it is still selling for around $165. For $10 more you can get a 945 chipset mobo that can handle dual core procs. Should you ever feel a need to updgrade the proc, that might be a handy feature.

since you don't care about using DDR2 or PCI-E, I say to get the ABit AA8 (That's intel, right? Or is that the AMD??) or the ASUSTeK P5AD2. I don't care for DFI, MSI, or anything else. I stick with ASUS Or ABit.

I hear Abit or Asus is the way to go for Intel boards.
Ok, I read the first post wrong. I thought Alchemy said he didn't want to use PCI-E or DDR2. Looks like he said that he don't care. Well, that changes things. Step up and get the latest techology. The AGP vid card is dying. For socket LGA775 with PCI-E and DDR2, then look at the Abit AA8XE or better yet, get one of the i945/i955 chipset mobos like Asus P5WD or Abit AW8 so you'll have an upgrade path to the dual core processors.
Lots of people are having trouble with the DFI hybred mobo too. The Abit AS8 does undervolt, but the Asus P5P800 droops under load worse. Any of the i865/i875 chipset hybreds will have voltage issues since that chipset's power circuitry really was never designed for the power hungry Prescotts.

I hope you are kidding.
Batboy:
The only one that seems to fall in my price range is the Abit AA8XE. I would love to have a P5WD, but funds don't permit at this moment. I see you are using an AA8XE...how do you like it?
It's a great mobo. Very stable and seems to overclock well. I saw that newegg has a mail in rebate on them right now. The only downfall is they don't seem to like running above 290 FSB (only a problem if you run 14X at high clock speeds) and they don't support the Pentium D dual core processors. I wrote up a little overclocking guide for the AA8XE, just look for the sticky post in the Abit motherboard section.

I don't think I'll run into the problem of too much FSB. The chip I bought is a "china" chip. So, I already know I'll be "limited" on my OC. I'll check out your sticky sometime this weekend. I am about to go out of town. I am not really worried about the dual core thing. It seems like Intel still has a few quirks to work out with the dual core.
