Does anyone know where U can buy Video RAM? The kind that's soldered on? I read about this guy souping up a Geforce MX400 with 2.5ns RAM (didn't even know it existed) in the video card section and was wondering if it could be done with a GF3 or Radeon 8.5k and what it would cost? Also whats the fastest availabe DDR Video RAM?

I don't think you can do that. If I'm not mistaken, each card has a controller chip that tells what information to go to what RAM chip. If you added more chips, they would go unnoticed (And subsequently unused) by the controller chip(s).
Of course, that's all speculation. I don't know if vidcards have any way to measure or control their RAM chips.

wouldnt a modded bios flash be able to change that?
sounds like a good ideal.

I was thinking of faster RAM rather than more of it. If you can get 500MhZ out of 3.8 ns RAM just think what 2.5 ns could do for mem bandwith....

Yea, but if you don't have the GPU and AGP bus to feed it, what's the use?
Putting 2.5NS RAM on a GeForce2 MX (Which is what this thread is about) is completely pointless. 5 MXs wouldn't be able to provide the RAM with enough to do.
On a GeForce3 Ti500, that's another story. But still, I think 2.5ns would be too much even there.

That was my point, to mod a high end card. I just wanted to know if it could be done and if so how much it would cost

That would be really difficult to get everything to work right, might as well solder a athlon1800 for your gpu lol;)
But really if you're going to go that far, you could do a volt mod for the ram and peliter cool them and get some nice o/c.

i am sure it would work with the right type of ram, but you are going to have to get the ram from the manufactorer and convince them to sell it to you.

I really don't think I have the expertise or connections to do a mod like that, I was just curious if it could be done. However, that bit about a voltage mod sounded interesting...

Also say there are 3 versions of a card the 16mb,32mb and 64mb(oh 6 because of ddr and sdram)
You could take a 16mb sdram card and transform it into a 64mb ddr card(with only a bios update,in theory).
that ideal of intergated about intergrating a cpu as a gpu would be sweet!:D

just the idea of making one of my spare athalon 1ghz my video card a new gpu makes my mouth water uncontrollabely. i would give major props to whoever could pull this off.

actually they are mini cpu's. Probably as fast as a really nice Pentium1 Processor or better. I remember hearing that sound cards have a better processing unit than a 486.

i think if you could get hold of the ram it wil be very expensive, it is bought in large numbers to bring the price down, then there is the problem of soldering it on...

well about the replace GPU with CPU.... it couldnt work but if it could it wouldnt be faster, a GF2 had more transistors than a p3!!!! i think GF3 is even higher. I know my Geforce DDR is supposed to have number crunching capability of a cray 2! they are old but would still beat most home PC's today....

Bad things!
1st warranty doesn't cover ur damage
2nd it may not work
3rd possiblilty cant OC
4th SGram is special
5th Something may act strange
6th the monitor will be damage by critical Gfx card msg!
