What are the disadvantages? Speed loss? Do I need a special terminator?

disadvantage is that is costs 20 bucks

Of course, I'd look around a while and see if I could get one used for $5 or something. I'd never pay $20 for it.

This will reduce bus speed, limiting transfer rates to 20MB/s SCSI-2 speeds.

Also, in some rare cases if the controller has 16bit wide support it may try to negotiate 16bit wide support with the drive (even over a 50pin 8bit cable) which would result in data transfers failing. Check the bios on the controller and turn off wide negotiation if possible when using an adapter like this.
