View Full Version : Networking problems...are 10baseT NICs compatible with 10/100baseTX NICs?

Reason for asking is that I can't access my other system's shared folders (from either of the system). Workgroups are labled as the same, ipx, tcp/ip, and netbeui enabled...what's going on here?
Could the NICs be the problem<ie, one is just a crappy NIC, while the other is better, resulting in incompatablility?
well, I'm not too sure whats going on there..you didn't give much information...
but I don't think the NICs are your problem..

sorry about lack of info, my minds been jelly for two days whlie I have been attempting to figure out whats wrong with the network/internet at my house.
anyway, here's some stuff to fill in the gaps.
- I'm using a Linksys 4 port gateway/router
- connecting to the net using @Home service
- got the internet sharing working...<see my other thread
- I have set up netbuei, ipx, and tcp/ip protocols on both systems.
- one system is using an older 3com NIC that is not 10/100mb/s BaseTX that came with the @Home service
- the other system is using an Aopen NIC that is 10/100mb/s Base TX
-both systems have the same workgroup name
-one system runs win98<cause it's an older pentium 166
-the other system is running winME
-both systems have shared drives on them
-when attempting to access the network, I recive an error telling me that it cannot access the network.
-the router recongnises both systems on the network.
hope that helps a bit

Can either of the machines see themselves/each other in network neighbour hood??
Shouldn't be a problem: I use 10 and 10/100 all the time; cheapo's are ok too- I have a 3Com, Intel and 1 realtek (cheapo) in use now.
A few things:
NICS installed ok according to os?
Running through a patch cable or hub/router/switch? Regular network cables will NOT work pc to pc, you need to get (or make) a patch cable. Also: if you are using a hub(etc) is it 10(ethernet or 10/100(Fast Ethernet, switching) or just 100(Fast Ethernet.) Fast Ethernet only hardware is not common, but it's around and does NOT work at the slower speed.
TCP/IP on both?
Configured correctly? Using dhcp or manual ip address?Workgroup must be the same, subnet must be the same, and the ip address must be ALMOST the same:
If not using dhcp these are common settings to use
ie 192.168.0.1 on one pc,
192.168.0.2 on the other,
255.255.255.0 as subnet,
Workgroup as workgroup.
Also try to ping ip address.
good luck

no, the systems don't see eachother in the network neihbourhood....
I'm using a router for the network, and it supports 10/100, but it is possible that it only supports 100mb/s over the LAN....the router itself sees both systems. Set up for DHCP, and workgroups are the same....

Go to a command prompt and type C:\>winipcfg /all then hit enter and post what it says in there. You may want to X out your first octect of you IP addy for your own security (unless your running 198. or 10. networks, that won't matter)
