I hve this old 9200se that died from heat.So i made a keychain out of it. I used a flat head screw driver to punch it out of the card it self :p because i did not have cutting disks for my dremel.

woah, for punchin itout with a srewdriver i turned out pretty good. obviously you had sanding drums for the dremel :P

of course :D no dremel is complete with out a sanding drum lol. Iwas wonder should i drill straight into the core to attach it to the keychain? right now i left an extra bit of the pcb so i can drill through it and attach it to the keychain.

Why not make it a necklace with a "gold" chain? (Doesn't have to be real if you're short on cash.)
I've thought about doing something like this, but I don't have any broken hardware that's worth showing off. I've found a solution, though. I used a working USB drive because I needed one for school. My friends thought that it's a very big deal. Then again, you usually don't see chicks with USB drives...

Dats da pimpin foo. Yo are goin to get da ladies tonight!

No, really, its actually pretty awesome. But like Dell_Axim, i really don't have any hardware, unless i use a floppy drive but thats not "IN"

lol! thats so gangster... seriously...

I think i will make one out of an old pentium.... HAHAHA pentium 1. lol. its gonna be the pimperest..

Totally gonna do that when somin of mine dies

i may be wrong but i did this also with a 9800pro core on a dead board also.
the core is attached with a ball/pin array i think its called.
if you slide a screwdriver between the cores pcb and the pcb that was the board,it will snap a few pins that are soldered an then just fall off.
it will leave a flat surface like that of a lga775 cpu.

i also drilled into a corner of the black core.its really soft and just used a phillips screw driver that was really small as its easy to control and not damnage it.

ill look for mine i did as i had pics as i sold them in the classifieds :)

Tyreal
07-28-05, 07:44 PM
wow. you sold it? How much?
oh ****zle. i will try it out on my old ati rage. Good times...

not really nwo that i think about it... tried playing cs on that rage... haha

i tried everytging to search for the thread in the classifieds and i cant find it anywhere.
it was sold to this member Daba http://www.ocforums.com/member.php?u=47436

mabey if you contact him as hes still active he may have a pic and how durable it was.
im not sure this will work with all cores either. but the one above looked like mine did.
i think i got $15 shipped out of it.
makes a killer looking keychain tho.and this was a year ago so it was a rather new core also :)

Make sure you find one of the PCB mounted ones, not the regular grey ones. I couldn't get a drill through that stuff.

I do have a Pentium keychain, though...I took it off because it was a little too large.

lol yeh ceramic doesnt drill to well.
i sent one with my dad a while back to his work to put on a drill press.
he came home and was upset and was all "sorry, but i broke your cpu" lol he was thinking i would be upset but i remember telling him it would most likley break. i guess he thought it was worth more than $.50

so i can separate the core from the pcb? using a flat screw driver?

Yup, get a razor too, that works.

I used a knife for mine:

See the core's black top? The partially lapped black top? Well, I believed that was an IHS for a die under the black/copper cap. Guess I was wrong :p

yeh id advise a razor blade as i think thats what i originally used.i dont know why i said screw driver but that would work, just not as exact.

in the pics SolidxSnake privided i left my core exactly as shown in pic1
mine still had the writing on it so it looked cool. plus it added weight and some sturdyness to it.its also still soft and easy to get a hole threw it.

I have had a stick of EDO RAM on my keychain for about 4 years. It is great fo cutting the tape on boxes, and scraping crap off of other crap ;)

The pcs looks like it could snap, using the core is a good idea.

For Maximum bling factor I recommend using an old Slot 1 CPU. This will make it a real eye catcher. I'm sure that with this fashion accessory you will be have women climbing all over you as if you walked into a women's prison with a fist full of pardons.

1.This makes me sad because I actually use a 9200se, lol.
2.How hot was that thing? I CANT get mine over like 45C even after like 30min. of Nature on 3dmark01se(measured with probe taped to the plastic on the side of the cpu)
3. My nerdy keychain is cool too its a piston/rod assemblie out of a .15 cu. in. nitor R/C engine.
4.What the hell did I do with that old pentium 1...?

O, and where theres the 2 little indentions on the plastic sides of the GPU, i say you drill through there so you dont have to have the extra pcb hanging off

Ah, I mourn the passing of a good vid card, but now it serves a higher function. :)

I think a 4800+ X2 core would look much better as a keychain. Then put it on a key ring for a car that is only worth half of what you paid for the x2.

as have I. since i was in 7th grade. but i cut the chips off of mine and filed it down smooth. i recently added a stick of laptop ram (from a mac actually) caus it was shorter and a good flat surface for scraping. haha.

on the ring are keys to my home, car, and my perrdy antec case. and the sticks.

That's neat, I've seen people with memory on their keychains, but never a chip, neat.

The Simplest and SAFEST way to seperate a BGA chip from a PCB is to turn A oven(toaster oven recomended, I would not recomend using a regular house oven. melted solder probally leaves stuff we should not eat) into a minature reflow oven. Crank it up ~450+ range and leave the chip in there for a little while. Then find a thin screw driver and shove it between the chip and the PCB. It will just fall apart, however you will have quite a solder mess to clean up on the chip.

i may just have to burn something up so i can do this.

I have a dead Duron (core chipped to hell) that I have yet to make a keychain out of; is the PCB on those silicon or ceramic (not that it matters immediately; my Dremel was "borrowed" by a relative and never returned :bang head )?

Great job for using a screwdriver; IMO it looks better with the hole drilled through the PCB instead of the chip itself :D
