I didn't see this in the x800 thread for overclocks but with the stock cooler im getting 420/1105mhz up from a stock 400/980mhz, im running @ 55c load 37c idle, that a decent overclock?

Core's not that great, my Sapphire does 445/555 on the stock cooler @60-61C.

yeah the core seems a little gimpish to me i mean only 420? but its still using the stock paste so it might not be making great contact, i'm still waiting for my atisilencer 5

Depends mind you, is it an AGP or PCI-E model you have?. I have AGP with molex connector, I've noticed some of the models without the molex don't clock as high.

yeah its an agp with molex the prob is heat for it though, i can run it @ 435 for about 10 seconds (50c) untill it hits 57c, then it starts gfx erroring, meh its still a decent set of clocks, i can't wait for the silencer

Yes the ATI Sliencer should give you alot of better results!

You must have your PC in a cold room. Mine idles around 37º-39ºC under watercooling with as5/glued copper heatsinks on the memory.
Your OC is about what I expected out of my X800 XL. I got it up to 469/582 (1164) though, which I'm very happy about. Mine seems to do best when it stays under 45ºC on load. (BBA/w molex connector, AGP)
Sweet, I just ordered my x800 xl today... 229.00 at tiger direct!

hehe well it idles at about 36c and right now its about 72f in here... but its summer so those temps will go up to about 90 today... -_-
edit: just a quick question... ive never seen this before so i thought it a little odd that there was a chip on the back of the card? i mean it looks just like a mini northbridge- i was just worried that it was supposed to come with a heatsink but... i guess not lol
yeah the ati x800xl is not good for oc'ing at all ive tried numerous times and i just leave it at default.

edit: whoops wrong link :fixed:

Mine does 445.04 core and 1075.5 mem . Being watercooled , the issue here is no doubt the lack of voltage going to the card , since it is an ATI made card and has no molex . I can get both higher but those are my values after looping runs of artifact tester .

hmm well ive got mine @ 432/1122 now and theres no errors but i had a little chat with viperjohn and he said that the inefficiences of the core are what kills the overclock and that adding more voltage wouldn't help... ah screw it here it is lol
The x800XL's typically respond very poorly to increased Vcore and core cooling. Their dies were not Fab'ed using a lowK process so there internal current leakages are very high to begin with. Increasing the clock speed increases those losses rapidly. Increasing the Vcore, even, with increased cooling, does so at even a higher rate.
Best advice is to lock the stock GPU cooler fan up at 100% speed then stock OC the card for all you can get a and be happy with it.
John
by adding more voltage im talking about voltmods not molex that may be holding you back in your case
im hopeing to get a tad bit more out of the core with as5 but im not expecting much, im adding ramsinks to the card too so that my increase my ram clocks
edit: i just got my gpu down to 28c lol man i hope it gets like this during the winter...heheh its only 72f right now

Voltmods are exactly what I mean but they won't be of much benefit without a molex . I think what is happening is that the X800Xl is at the limits of the PCI-E bus' power envelope ( I could be wrong ) . When one overclocks it and thus raises the ammount of current and voltage neccessary to run the card stably , the PCI-E interface is coming up short . Now don't get me wrong I am aware that the TSMC 110nm process is 'high'K and not well suited to overclocking anyway , but I do believe that the need for a little extra power is shown by the generally better performance of the cards with a molex . Without a molex I don't think that there would be much benefit to adding a voltmod as I think that it would further sap the PCI-E bus . What would be interesting to see is if guys were to start soldering molexes onto their Xl cards .

pshhh i don't even get to use ac for the house :( well i got everything set up but im still waiting on my ram sinks and as5, with my custom cooler and crap paste im getting up to 432/561, not terrible in my oppninion
what temps are you hitting with that anyway?
