Hey guys, this is one for all of you that are married /kids or have another person living with you.
So my wife discoved the internet about a month ago, and at about the same time so did my 10 year old daughter. Up until this time the computer was my domain, no one else ever touched it or even realized it existed. Since then my wife is now receiving more spam and random emails than i get in a year (all of mine are legitimate btw) and this morning she calls and says there is a trojan on the system. I told her to turn the d**n thing off and leave it alone. SO she calls me 5 minutes ago and says that powerscan is installed on my account and why was i using a program to remove porn. :argue: :bang head
Needless to say now not only do i have to remove virus's tonight i'm also looking at having to remove spyware now because she just couldn't follow directions and turn it off. I am so po'd right now its not funny. I've been telling her since i gave her an e-mail address a month ago how to use the computer and internet and be safe about it, but she just doesnt listen!!!!! And my daughter is even worse. She visits the pokemon or neopet sites constantly and keeps downloading crap......ARGH. THe funny thing is that my wife thinks the sites are ok since they're for kids. WHat a joke!!
Well the jokes on them, tonight i'm putting together a comp just for them, changing the wifes e-mail, and then i'm gonna sit back with a cold beer, and watch the mayhem. I give it 3 weeks before the computer is hosed and needs a good formatting. Anyone wanna place any bets? /rant.

ROFL.
I guarentee within 3 days you will hear... "umm, honey... My new computer is screwed up. I think you do something wrong when you built it"
I know how you feel. I dont know how many times I have to tell my wife, SMILEYS ARE EVIL. They may be cute, but they are evil. Unfortunately, I dont have anywhere to put a computer for them. I attempted setting up user accounts in XP. No luck. That crap still spreads the same. Now I just do a reformat once every 2 or 3 months. It's not that my wife is computer illiterate, she just has poor web surfing habits.

No doubt, she uses smileys all the time on her forums, and even opens a window each time that has links for smileys. ARGH, well i don't exactly have room for her comp either but when i set up the folding table, i think she'll start to listen a little better. BTW my "computer room" is in the family room in the front of the house and everyone who comes over sees the room. haha.

im called many times for advice from my x-wife as either her or my stepson has downloaded crap that messes the whle rig up.
i give them one simple answer. restore it! im not fixing it.
this way they loose everything they saved which is useless imo anyhow.soon enough they will learn to be more responsible after going threw this a few times.

Ah yes, I had the same problem with my dad. He's over 60 well like all men likes porn and porn=viruses, trojans and all kinds of computer problems so after he screwed up my comp few times I convinced him to get one for himself, I did setup an XP account with NO privileges and installed NOD32 with SpyBot and the computer has been running great for about a year, no re formats or anything.
Ghost that baby. Will make life easier. :)

my wife is very computer illiterate... but all she does is play Sims 2: University and talk on AIM to her mom. Her computer is actually VERY virus and spam and trojan and malware-of-your-choice free

i give it 5 days untill it wont boot.
my family luckily has good surfing habits so a spybot and virus scan every month-ish is enough.
My sister is a Neopets-obsessed, violent, angry little 13 year old(little too old to play neopets in my opinion). She has broken my computer and deletes my win32 and System files on "accident". She sneaks into my room to play The Sims but I set a BIOS password and that seemed to help. My parents are pretty good at keeping the computer clean and don't let my sister use it so she has her own laptop with problems galore. I run a Virus Scan and a Spyware Scan every week or so. As for your family computer, If they are anything like my sister, it will take a day to break it(she plays THAT much).

Mate,
Switch to Linux as your first boot OS. A lot harder to destroy! :p

my wife knows how to use a computer. But i still get the HUNNY it is not working and i have to walk out to the front room and fix it.
But i understand the sharing of computers. We had one for the both of us that lasted for about a month after i got back from overseas and i got her a laptop. Some of the stuff she downloads kills me. It is not bad stuff just programs that she thinks is cute. I just keep locking sites down with Smoothwall now. If they cant get to them they cant install it

I could never stand sharing a computer... I'd end up going insane or flipping out and hurting someone :D

Same here, it just bugs me because even though it's not their computer it seems like they still feel the need to go in and change random settings and/or download some stupid crap. All the guests at my house use the family computer.

I haven't shared a computer with my wife since our old HP witha 400mhz Celeron was top of the line.
Since then she has learned a little about what bad and good. After I had to reformat her current computer and was unble to save anything due to the viral contet she finally listens to me a little. It took loosing a thousand or so pics that she uses for photo enhancment work before she belived me that she was the cause. Of course I got the "I'm not going to any sites that I could get viruses from." After arguing with her for several hours that she had to be, I relented and let her use my computer to check her mail while I was repairing her comp.
It took her 10 mins to screw up my malware, spyware, virus free. After getting back on it my self and seeing the pop ups start, I ran a scan. 10 min and she got over 500 hits on ad-aware alone. After showing her how ****ed I was and that it was her fault she finally took the hint that it was her fault.

Hey, I play Neopets and I'm way over 13...problem with that site is that it's full of adware and other crap that will bog a box down quick if you don't have a good hosts file (1cem4n, if you want, PM me and I can email you a copy of my hosts file that has almost every ad site they use).
How the HELL can win32/system files be deleted "on accident"?!
I only let others use Navi if I'm in the room; my laptop is only touched by me.
There's the odd time when I have to spend a day or so cleaning crap off my mom's computer but there hasn't been anything too horrible. My dad uses Gator (or whatever it's calling itself this week) :bang head

At least im not alone!! haha, well i built her a computer and now she off and running. I tried to install linux but it doesnt seem to like the onboard video on her board so i had to use windows. Shes happy, my comp is now used only by me and i told her im not touching her computer until it breaks down. Now the only problem is that she can sit over my should all the time and make comments about what im typing on here. At leasat we get to spend quality time together in front of our computers!!!!! :argue:

The told my parents about it but they took her side and said that I probably broke it. They think that whatever happens to my computer, I did even though they see her in my room on my computer. I think I'm going to use Dog Crap as a TIM in her new laptop.

I feel extremely lucky. I have my own machine and nobody else touches it. My sister has her own machine and knows to avoid everything online, but she has been using computers as long as I have so that's no big suprise. If she needs anything done on my machine she'll just leave a note on my desk.
As for the parents, they don't do anything other than e-mail. And they do that one their own machine.

My computer == MY computer. My brothers get to use it, but ONLY if they ask first, they are not allowed to surf the internet on it, use AIM, etc. as they play games online, and thus bog down my poor lil system :(.
I even installed a hosts file...

Man, I couldn't go back to using a shared computer. I used to have a P3 550Mhz Katmaii (SLOT BABY!!), and that was my family computer (my dad and my brother). A little before I got my computer (March-ish 2k3), my brother got a laptop for HighSchool Graduation. So that was 1 down. Then finally, I got my own computer December of 2k3... My god it was sweet. No1 to bog up the computer with loads of spyware.

Hey, Im matttaylor's wife. As bad as he may make me sound, Im really not that stupid. Hey I figured out his password to get on here did'nt I? (after only 2 attempts). What he failed to mention was that we have'nt had internet here for 5 years and the last time I had access to it, was the year 2000 and I had no problems then. So how was I supposed to know that everything has changed and that people just have way TOO MUCH time on their hands to work on creating viruses to screw up other peoples computers! These idiots need to get a life! Oh and by the way, when he was so busy talking down to me about how much I don't know about computers( yes, Im not ashamed to admit that I am computer illiterate) all I did was remind him that there are a lot of things that I know that he has no clue about! I was an EMT and all I did was ask him to run a code for me with all the correct medications and doses and he could'nt do it. So, everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses and interests. I love my husband very much and I don't know what I would do without his computer, mechanical and technical skills. He may be a geek but I love him all the more for it!

I'm takin matttaylor's side, because I've been in the same situation time after time again. The other person always says that they are doing what you instructed them to do. Yet, they still get spyware/adware.
edit:
BTW, Even after you found out how screwed up the internet is, and after your husband told you how to handle it, did you listen? Be honest, don't get mad.
And I don't see how every1 has their 'strengths and weaknesses' has anything to do with this subject. If your husband isn't lying (well, not lying TOO bad), then it seems that even after he explained how to handle it, you blatantly shunned his instructios.

I save most of my old stuff and built everyone there own, my Daughter has one, my oldest son, my wife, and my 2 youngest boys all have there own, I have my main rig and my Laptop( Both nobody dares touch:mad:, also got the wife her own Laptop.
-Milkman
I got everyone set up with their own, after much hassle and whining; each of my two little brothers has one, my mom has one, I have my personal machine, and let my girlfriend use one of my other machines. My oldest younger brother wipes his machine every month or so, and the other one doesn't do much else other than play City of Heroes or whatever MMO he's on now. My mom, haha, I will just wipe hers when it gets bad enough. Girlfriend's is also going to be wiped and turned into a server as soon as I get my chiller going (getting that gives me the parts I need for another machine).
I would ghost them, but I'm extremely lazy and driver updates and such occur so often that I just install the newest stuff right then.

that's me too.both son's' have their own,and daughters/wife share one.
ARTFGGHHH!! I hate shared computers... GEEZ. I get PO'd just by someone sitting at on my pc chair at the my pc. ARRGH....
My parents computer was so bogged down with viruses and spyware... holy smokes... My dad is no computer illiterate but he doens't know all too much at that. He thinks im obsessed with cooling. because i cut my case, and mod, and buy blocks of metal i am obssessed. WELL NO DUH! I overclock! smokes...
My brothers computer is another story. He downloads every freakin game you can imagine. Watches pr0n and sick stuff. I mean hes younger than me! his is not so bad but he fails to maintain it.
Then there was this time when my friends came over and screwed my pc up so much. I went away for one second and when i came back i had popups, spyware galore everywhere. THIS SUCKS.
I plan to password my bios so noone can use it, but its a real pain in the ass.
I THINK IM GOING CRAZY. IM FIFTEEN YEARS OLD AND IT REALLY SUCKS THAT EVERYONE DEPENDS ON YOU TO MAINTAIN THEIR COMPUTERS.AGAGGGGHGHHHH
I used to mess up my older brothers computer a few years ago when i didnt have a computer :D serves him right for "attemping" to hide certain media files :D
But now no one touches my computer :) ... They just mess up my younger brothers :D... So im lucky i guess
And i know how you feel Tyreal :( My little brother attempts to add a fan or overclock something, which always results in him coming upstairs and beggining me to fix it... Then i fix it and it works fine, then the next day he comes up and says "My computer has been acting up and YOU were the last person to touch it so YOU must have broke it!"
Well, my computer is shared between myself, my mother and occasionally my father, and I haven't had many problems so far. I basically told my mother not to open any files from email before she shows it to me, and she's even more paranoid about security than I am, so it works out fine.

Yeh Aslan, i wish my mom even knew how to turn on a monitor :(
lol. i remember once when my bro didn't even know how to turn on the comp. but i think he was just bs ing. My bro doesn't overclock, let alone know what it is. he always needs help, and parents think overclocking is some kind of evil product destroying thing.
Probably because i screwed up my nf7-s then blamed overclocking just so i could buy a new one. :)

When my girlfriend comes into town she uses my PC. However she just checks her gmail account, the weather, and tv guide. Her problem is not knowing how to maintain a PC. Up until last year she had no idea where defrag was or that you needed to use it. Whenever I go to visit her I still end up wasting Sunday morning getting her PC to run smoothly again.

I feel the same as many of you here. Everyone around me depends on me for keeping their pc's working. A combination of Adaware, Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster keeps their pc's pretty clean. I also use Kaspersky antivirus on them, which is IMO the best.
Recently my father became computer literate. About a year and a half ago, he got his first pc, and learned things roughly in this order: How to turn it on, how to basicly browse the web to find stuff, how to defragment, run disk cleanup , and get rid of spyware, how to check his email, ect. He really took this to heart, and keeps his pc spotless. Recently he went out and purchased a nic card, and installed it on his own. My point? Get people started in the right direction.

She has gmail because of me. I didn't think she was going to use it, but everytime I turn around she is checking her account. I just d/l'ed the gmail notifier for her and she thinks it's the greatest thing ever.
