Decided to defect to the other side, goodbye Intel hello AMD!

I am totally new to this product, so I may need some advice from time to time.

My computer is in need of a total revamp so decided to take the AMD route as I have read some good reports about these chips. Reading up on the M/boards I think I will hold out for the Abit KR7-RAID, unless you guys can convince me otherwise!

The chip itself is the problem, I was set on the Athlon 1.4, but the 1.5XP is not much more expensive (UK), what is the difference, and which would you go for. What is the overclocking capabilities of the 1.5XP, is it as easy as the Athlon to Overclock?

Thanks for your time

from what i have read the 1500XP doesnt clock as high as the 1.4 so if you're lookin to overclock then go for a 1.4 AYHJA chipset. these are reported to be the most reliable high overclockers. right now i would go for a KG7-RAID as the KR7's wont be out until the end of October by all accounts.

if you are really wanting spped wait til December and go for a 1600 or 1700 because by then they should have a better chipset stepping out and no doubt it'll clock better, also by then the KS7 should be out which is the SiS 735 chipset M/board which will kick cr@p out of the KR7 (IMHO).

And as you're in UK like me you can take advantage of Crucials free shipping to order 1/2GB - 1GB DDR PC2100 for not to much at all. (VAT sucks. )

anyway just my thoughts, no doubt other ppl will blast me out of the water as i am still a newbie here myself

no doubt that the 1.4 may clock better but, for a fact the XP 1.5 will outperofrm the 1.4 tbird on all occasitions. it is a better instructed chip meaning more efficeint. The XP 1.5 will beat the 1.4 tbird hands down at a lower speed, it kinda like Amd beating intel at lower mhz it just runs better

i would expect the 1.4ghz tbird to be just about the same proformance of the 1.33ghz XP(1500+). XP will win in programs optimized to take advantage of those instructions and the tbird will win in the others.

at least, i think so ;)

regardless if the program has been made to run better on XP procs it will still beat a tbird due to 52 extra instruction sets. It is the same as AMD vs INTEL , kinda a AMD+ vs AMD.

The XP also runs cooler, so that helps casual overclockers get higher clock speed than a 1.4ghz o/c.

ok if ur upgrading now and want to go for future proof (for a few months anyway), go for an XP 1500 or 1600 purely because they shud clock nicely.

or you could do the waiting game save ur money and get a thoroughbred in 2002.

but if ur gonna buy now, get it from the US cos UK prices are far too high right now. you can pay $230(for an XP1800) in US which should be about £180ish but they are selling for £230 inc VAT over here.

just MHO

Personally, I would wait for the XP prices to fall. I knew the XP was coming out but the prices were silly for what it was. I bought a TB 1.4GHz for £102.99 and its great. Doesn't like too much of an overclock but it was cheap.

Now I ask you. What would you want?

A 1.4Ghz TB that can overclock to ~1.6Ghz for ~£100
OR
A 1.533 Ghz XP that can overclock to ~1.7Ghz for twice that around £230?
