Howdy all, new to the world of overclocking but really curious. I have an old (free) Intel SE440BX-2 MB with a Celeron 366 in a socket/slot adapter. 384mb pc100 RAM, 8gb HD.

I know the MB is supposed to be able of handling up to a 800 P3 but I want to see if I can overclock the 366 CPU and figure any cooling mods that I do can transfer over to any new MB or CPU.

What do I do and where do I start? I've read some of the FAQ pages but they offer no info specific to my MB & CPU.

Some basics, your chipset is the 440bx chipset. My old one went up to 150 Mhz fsb with increments. Turn on your computer and hold delete to enter your bios. Go to "chipset features" and look for fsb speed. If you have it you should be able to change the fsb from 66, 75 or 83 Mhz. Warning though, 83 Mhz fsb runs your pci/isa bus out of wack, and some cards and hhds can't handle that.

second, look at the board for jumpers. There should be a fsb jumper switch. If you see it look for silkscreening of what the jumpers are. My best bet would be to set it to auto if you can and use your slocket adapter's jumpers.

As for OCin, iv seen 366 go to 100Mhz fsb giving out 550 or if your cards can handle it, 83 would give you about 450. You should invest in a good cooler. I don't think you need much of a super cooler. I had my current 433 celeron runing 540 (6.5*83) with a golder orb and the Gorbs aren't really good coolers at all.

As for new CPUs, some bx board sopport 133fsb and some don't. So for new CPU you should handle all celerons up to 1.1Ghz and pentium 3s up to 1Ghz with 100Mhz fsb. If you board sopports 133fsb then all copermine cpus should work. To test this boot up with 100Mhz fsb and enter bios. Look at fsb speed, and move it up to 133 and see if the second number is 33. Or look around for pci divider and see if it has 1/4 option. (133/4=33)33 is standard pci bus speed

Eric You have an Intel Motherboard. They can not be overclocked.

You can still overclock with an intel MOBO, just you have to go for the 100Mhz fsb. It's risky but it might be your only shot. If you want to buy a new cpu, a celeron 600 cDO can do 100fsb I hear. You might be able to find them for $30. To overclock you need to do it through the slocket. Change the fsb to 100.

WOOHOO!!!! I did it, successfully. I changed the FSB speed by moving a jumper on my slocket adapter to the 100mhz position. CPU speed jumped from 366 up to 550mhz. I also have a spare 366C in anothe slocket and it went to 549 with the stock fan/heatsink.

I did install a better (than stock) cooler fan with a nice copper heat sink. According to MBM my temps never get above 40C except up to 42C under continuously (4 hours) looped CPU burn-in with SiSoft Sandra.

It's rock steady except my video card doesn't like it and occasionally freaks.

What's a good new, cheap, video card to buy?

Eric :D

I think the question might be redundant here. Video cards generally run either cheap or good. Good is new, and cheap is old.

There are alot of bargains out there, so decide what you want your card to do for you..(gamer or non-gamer) and look at last years cards and there you should find some great deals just about anywhere.

I'm not a gamer so I got a All in Wonder ATI rage pro 128 w/32mb memory...and it does everything i want it to do.. and it cost me $119 four months ago.

Depends on what you wanna do with the card... Play games? Get the Radeon LE or a Geforce 2 mx-400.....they're stinkin cheap now. The Geforce might be the better choice with that CPU.

With the BX chipset There can be problems with sideband addressing even though you should be at 2/3 on AGP. Make sure that you are not set to 1/1. Your AGP bus runs at 66mhz and 1/1 is fine as long as your using the 66mhz FSB. When you OC to 100mhz you need a 2/3 ratio to keep the AGP bus at 66. An ATI card is your best choice. I am using an ATI Expert 98/ 8mb card in my general purpose machine and was able to push my BE6 board with 566celey to 850 after installing the ATI. Nvidia cards are great for game machines without BX chipsets. I do not recommend them for systems trying to get maximum over clock from a BX unless that over clock is to 133 FSB

My opinion for a decent vga card and also cheap:
MX II 400.....

If you want to game and want really cheap I would get the radeon LE. With a registry key it'll basicaly be a radeon with a little slower memory. I got me a radeon ve for $65. Works great as I don't game. My monitor accually is holding me back not the card. Still my card plays unreal tourny smooth at all high res, at 1024-768 16bit and even 1280-1024 16bit it's still playable at high res. The radeon le is faster in games, so It'll be a good suggestion.

Also, in stead of using cpu-burn in software, get Folding@home. It'll run your CPU@100load and will not hinder ANY system performance. Links in sig if you're interested. Great for burning-in,testing, in backround without you knowing and plus you benefit the team.

Your right! Intel SE440BX-2 cant be OC!!!
I have one at work w/ PIII450 and it cannot be overclocked.
